“I’m pregnant.”

Chapter 18

Pregnant? Had he heard her right?

“I’m sorry. Did … did you just say pregnant?”

She nodded sadly.

His stomach dropped, and a wave of dizziness overtook him as he turned his attention to the lake. The reflection of house lights and the glow from the floating candles on the water twisted and skewed. If it had been daytime, he was certain the trees and clouds and blue sky would be spinning all around him. This wasn’t happening. It couldn’t be.

He looked over at Jamie. “You’re saying you’re going to have a baby?”

“Yes.”

“My baby?”

“Yes.”

His heart pounded in his chest. “And you’re sure it’s mine?”

Her breath huffed out, and she looked more than a little insulted.

“I had to ask.”

“Did you, though?” She abruptly stood and walked up the dock.

Duncan jumped up and followed. “Jamie, wait.” He gently took hold of her arm to stop her and turned her to face him.

“You’re the only guy I’ve been with for over a year. You know this.”

“No one since me?”

“Only you,” she replied, brushing a tear from her cheek.

He let out a breath and raked his fingers through his hair. “Okay.”

“Look, I know you need time to let this sink in. I just needed you to know that it’s yours, and I’ve decided to keep it.”

He was taken aback. “Were you thinking about not keeping it?”

“Yes.” Her gaze fell.

“Without telling me?” She didn’t reply, and a flash of anger shot through him. “Is that why you left town?”

“I went home to my parents to clear my head and decide what to do.”

“Do you not want the baby?”

“I wasn’t sure at first, but I want it now. You can be involved or not. Whatever you want to do. I know this messes things up for you. And I’m sorry about that.”

Messes things up? Dréa! How was he going to tell his fiancée he had gotten another girl pregnant?

Jamie stood still and quiet while he paced back and forth on the dock, his mind racing wildly.

“Duncan?” Jamie’s voice was soft and filled with concern.

He stopped in front of her. “I don’t know what to say right now.”
