Why couldn’t things just be easy for once?
That’s when I heard the rock.
My gaze snapped to the side, my eyes widening in fear as a massive white dog appeared from the shadows. I scrambled backward, dragging my injured leg through the dry leaves. The dog cocked his head to the side in amusement, then started toward me.
“Nice doggie,” I said, my voice shaking with fear. “Please don’t eat me…”
It just wagged its tail. Probably because it knew I was an easy meal. I wasn’t about to hope that this dog was going to save me, like in some Disney movie. No. I was most likely dinner to it.
“Jesus fucking Christ,” I muttered as it got closer.
It was so much bigger than a normal dog. I heard Nana’s voice in my head once more, telling me that the mountain was overrun with wolves. Could she have been right all along?
I waved my tiny pocketknife in its direction, knowing it was useless against such a large animal. “Stay back!” I cried.
However, it kept coming toward me. Fear finally got the better of me and I tried to run. However, the moment I did, my injured leg caught on a rock and was yanked forcefully to the side. The wave of pain that washed over me was more intense than anything I’d ever felt. My vision swam as I fell to the ground, the world growing dark around me.
The last thing I saw was a giant white wolf approaching and licking its lips.
I wasn’t going to survive the night.
And then it all went dark.
Chapter Three: Thor
“How did I beat you back here?” Baldr asked as I walked into the main foyer of the house. He sniffed the air as I approached. “And why do you smell like blood?” He stopped, his eyes wide as he took another sniff. “Human blood?!”
“Keep your voice down,” I replied, placing my hand on his shoulder. “And come with me. I need your help.”
“Oh fuck… You didn’t kill anyone did you?”
“What?! No! Why would I kill a human?!”
“Why do you smell like human blood then?”
“Baldr,” I sighed. “Please.”
He stared at me for a long moment, searching my eyes for any hint of untruthfulness. Finally, when he could find none, he nodded. “Alright. Lead the way to whatever mess you’ve gotten yourself into now.”
“Thank you, brother.”
I took Baldr through the winding hallways of the resort that our pack ran. It was still too early in the morning for the guests to be up and moving around thankfully since I was still smeared with blood. We took the elevator up to the top floor, passed through a locked door into the private section of the resort where the Alpha’s family resided, my family, and took another set of stairs up to the highest point in the entire resort. That was where my private suite was that I’d inherited from my father when he died. Nobody was allowed up there except myself.
“Are you going to tell me what’s going on?” Baldr asked as we climbed the stairs to the top.
“You’re the oracle, you tell me.”
“Ha-ha. Very funny. You know I can’t do that on command.”
“I’ll tell you once we’re inside,” I replied.
“I’m going to regret agreeing to help you, aren’t I?”
I nodded. “Probably.”
I pulled open my front door, letting Baldr in first. Stepping in behind him, I quickly closed and locked the door. Given that it was still the early gray before dawn, the suite was entirely dark.
“It stinks like human in here,” Baldr growled, turning my direction. “What did you do?”
