As quietly as she could, she slipped inside.
A moan cut the air and her blood ran cold.
She wouldn’t.
Adaze raced to their bedroom, throwing open the door.
Adaze jerked awake as her ringtone cut through the air. She was still struggling to catch her breath when she answered without glancing at the screen.
“Hello?”
“Are you okay, Baby?” Leilani’s voice came through the speaker.
“I’m fine. Just a dream, don't worry about it,” she said as she drug a hand across her face.
“Are you sure? I’m more than happy to talk about it with you if you want.”
“No, it’s fine. Everything's fine.”
She could tell Leilani didn’t quite believe her, but she mercifully let it drop. “Alright, if you’re sure…” she trailed off.
“Listen, I need to get back to sleep. Can we talk tomorrow?”
“Yeah, sure. Whatever you need, but…”
“What? Is something wrong?”
“I didn’t do anything, did I? It feels like you might be upset with me.”
“No, you didn’t do anything wrong. Going out to today just…” She sighed. “Let’s just say it stirred up some unexpected memories.”
“Do you want to talk about it?”
“I probably should at some point, but not now. Is that okay?”
“As long as you promise to talk to me at some point.”
“I promise.”
“Then I’ll let you get some rest. We can talk more later. I hope you sleep well.”
“You too. We’ll talk more tomorrow.”
They hung up, and Adaze was surprised to find she did sleep easier after that.

LEILANI
Afew days later, Leilani was back at work; the call they were on was nothing too serious, though it was easy to see how it could have been if they hadn’t gotten there when they did. They were in a small state park and there, inching closer to the tree line, was a growing brush fire.
Civilians had already been evacuated, leaving them to handle the growing blaze in peace. Only a few of them went out on the call, Rory, Lux, and Leilani were there led by Captain Hunter.
“Alright everyone, you know what to do. Let’s move.”
The group moved with practiced ease, working together to beat back the blaze. It seemed like no time at all before they managed to extinguish it.
Rory let out a cheer, glancing at her watch. “I think that was a new record.”
