“Can I speak with Kai?” Jonah asks.

Kai nods, suddenly shy, and I give him an encouraging smile. Jonah is scary, but I know he means well. I hear him asking Kai about how the code was created as Miles grins at me.

“Great fucking job, man.” He pulls me into a hug.

“You think? I know it’s not our usual thing, but I think it really matters.”

“It really fucking matters,” Miles says. “And that’s enough. I’d be proud to put the Kings Lane name on this.”

My chest swells, and I nod, not trusting my voice.

Cat and I celebrate with champagne in the pool later. The air is still crisp, but the pool is heated like a hot spring. I pull her out into the deep end so she’s forced to wrap her legs around mine and cling to me in the water.

“You just want me anchored to you,” she says. Her eyes are starry as she smiles at me.

“Always,” I whisper, cupping her jaw.

“Good,” she whispers back. “Because I want you to know I tore up that separation agreement and burned it.”

I laugh. “Tearing it up would have been enough.”

She shakes her head. “No way. I didn’t want you changing your mind.”

I press a kiss to her mouth. She’s so lovely like this. It makes my heart hurt. Mine. Finally mine.

“I’m not going to change my mind, princess.”

“So it’s decided,” she says.

“What is?” I pull back so I can look at her.

“This might have started as fake, but we’re staying married forever.”

“I don’t know,” I say slowly. “Give me some time—”

“Theo,” she exclaims, pushing at my arms.

“Kidding.” I wink. I kiss her again, lingering this time. I let my lips drift to the freckle I fantasized about for so many years. “Forever,” I agree. “Definitely forever.”

EPILOGUE

Cat

“Nervous?” Blair asks. We’re getting ready in my room at the Montauk house. Theo’s throwing a birthday party tonight, a joint birthday for both of us.

“A little,” I say. I take a sip of champagne and run my hands down my sparkly dress. I wore it specifically because of the way Theo tried to take it off me when I put it on. “But,” I add. “Even if he says no, he’ll still have to go through the trouble of divorcing me.”

Blair laughs. “True. That would be a lot of effort. He’ll say yes, though.” She squeezes my shoulder. The ring Donny got her for their engagement glints on her finger. She always told me she didn’t need a ring, but I see her staring at it when she thinks no one is watching. She takes it off whenever she’s at the bar, which is less now that she’s a part owner and has a big role in a new show this fall.

A shout comes from downstairs. “Should we check that out?” she asks.

“We should probably make sure nothing is on fire,” I say.

When we get downstairs, my eyes widen. There’s a champagne fountain on the back deck and I can just spot a yacht docked off the beach. It’s festooned with lights and giant white balloons. A sign proclaims that fireworks start at ten p.m. Miles and Jonah are leaning on the railing, laughing at something.

“Oh no.” The words slip out. This is way too much.

Theo’s head whips around. “Oh yes,” he responds, with a devilish grin.
