She held her breath and waited.
He continued to frown while focusing on her face. Slowly, his grey eyes darkened with comprehension.
He realized she had drugged him.
There was a deep animal growl from his throat.
She screamed in terror, expecting him to strangle her or kill her.
But the next moment, his eyes rolled back, and his body slumped heavily over her. Before she could cry in relief or rejoice, dark spots filled her vision.
No! No!
Panicking, she tried to bring her hands in front of her. But her hands felt heavy and she could barely move them.
With a sob, she desperately tried to bring her left hand up. She could raise it halfway. But before she could will her other hand to come up, darkness enveloped her as well.
CHAPTER 16
Nandini woke up with a gasp.
She panicked as her head felt heavy, and she was unable to breathe. It felt as though there was a heated, heavy boulder kept on top of her chest.
She fought through the foggy haze in her mind while drawing in deep breaths. Moments passed as her surroundings came into focus, and she saw pale light streaming through an opening in the tent.
Her mind bolted awake as memories of the previous night rushed into her mind.
Oh God. I am in the holy land tent.
Sucking in another deep breath, she looked down where the demon was lying on top of her naked body.
He was unconscious.
Just like I planned.
But what she hadn’t planned was for her to fall asleep. The tiny sips of the fermented drink with a powerful drug had knocked her unconscious as well.
She let out a groan and tried to push the sleeping demon off of her.
She had to leave before he woke up from the drugged sleep. But he was way too heavy. His head lay on her chest, and his arms gripped her hips possessively, even in his sleep.
Sucking in a deep breath, she focused on the main task. She raised her left arm and brought it closer. Then, using her other hand, she clicked on a tiny latch inside the bracelet sent by her family.
She waited with bated breath and then let out a relieved cry when a small yellow light that nearly blended with the color of the bracelet blinked. It meant the distress signal was sent. She had tried to send the signal many times while in the encampment, but it didn’t work at the foothills of the mountain.
She knew the signal would work only on the top of a mountain.
Let the bracelet be a piece of home and guide you while you rise to new heights to find your way.
When she first began reading her mother’s letter, for a split moment, she was shocked that her family was accepting her circumstances. But she knew that her family would never leave her to fend for herself. They would destroy the world to protect her.
Her mother’s letter contained the code along with the bracelet they sent as a beacon to find her location.
She had planned to send the distress signal the previous night as soon as the demon fell unconscious with the drugged drink. But she had fallen unconscious as well. The signal was now sent, and a rescue helicopter would arrive soon.
She didn’t know how long it would take, but she had to wait at a place where she could be easily seen and rescued.
She once again tried to push the demon off her. But he was too heavy. Feeling frustrated and also not wanting her brothers to find her naked under the demon, she tried desperately to free herself.
