“I’m sorry about your parents,” she said. “I-I cannot prove it yet, but I know in my heart that my family isn’t responsible for their deaths. They—”

“Stop,” he commanded. “Don’t talk about the past.”

“We have to! It’s the only way we can resolve the conflict between our clans. As your wife—”

“Temporary wife,” he stated. “You plan to leave.”

She sucked in a breath at his reminder. Before she could say anything, he turned her away from him and held her.

“Sleep,” he commanded.

She opened her mouth to argue, but a gasp escaped her when the demon’s palm cupped her breast possessively.

Sizzling heat spread across her body.

She wanted to push his hand away, but his touch felt too good.

What worried her right then wasn’t just the physical attraction towards him.

She was drawn to the demon in other ways. She was fascinated by the fact that he grew up in western world but adapted easily to his father’s clan. She saw how fiercely protective he was of his people. His people respected him and were fiercely loyal to him.

She realized he was protective of her too.

She recalled the sweatshirt he had given her the previous night to keep her warm and the horse ride in the early morning when she was exhausted. He had also ordered her not to work due to her burn injuries.

Although he was an arrogant bully who constantly barked out commands at her, she felt safe in his arms. She knew he would protect her from any danger that would come her way.

No. No. I shouldn’t be drawn to him.

I hate him. I’m only with him for the sake of Singoor.

This is a temporary marriage.

Somehow, the words sounded hollow in her mind.

Even as her mind and body fell into turmoil, the events of the previous night and the long day caught up with her. Soon, she fell asleep in her demon husband’s arms.

CHAPTER 31

Thakvar mansion,

Singoor Desert.

“How dare he!” Rishab thundered.

Shivay controlled his rage as he held the long lock of hair. He didn’t have to send it to the lab and get a DNA test to know it belonged to Nandini. When the security brought the small box with the Kabali clan insignia, found near the holy land, Shivay immediately knew it was left deliberately.

“The savage bastard is warning us!” Nakul growled.

Shivay knew it was retaliation for warning the Kapoors on their home turf.

“That’s it,” said Rishab. “Let’s hunt down that bastard. We’ll ensure Nandini is safe and not caught in the attack.”

“Yes,” said Nakul. “We can form a small team so there’s no leak anywhere as we infiltrate the north.”

Shivay understood how his brothers felt. Right then, even he was tempted to do just that.

“It’s too risky,” he said. “The spy sent by the Aria clan was caught by the Kabalis and sent back as a warning. Except for me and the Aria clan head, no one knew we were planning to send a spy. Even I didn’t know a teenager was going to be sent.”
