“Return and begin preparations,” the demon commanded. “We’ll join you tomorrow.”
The men nodded before riding away.
Her heart thudded, wondering why the demon wasn’t taking her back to the encampment.
He rode in the opposite way of his men.
They passed the bodies of the dead horsemen with slit throats and chopped limbs.
She should have been terrified and horrified, but all she felt was immense relief that her demon husband returned safely from the clan meeting and could trace her on time.
She sensed his dark anger and knew some of it was directed at her. But despite watching him brutally kill and sensing his dark anger, she felt safe in his arms.
She leaned back and rested against him as they rode.
CHAPTER 37
Nandini opened her eyes when she felt the horse slowing down and coming to a stop.
They didn’t seem to come too far as she had only rested her eyes for some time. Wondering why they stopped, she turned and was shocked to see a tent. And unlike the Kabali encampment, she couldn’t see any other tents nearby.
The demon got down the horse. She was about to get down, but he placed a hand on her leg.
“Stay,” he commanded. “I’ll check inside. If I don’t return in a few minutes, and if you sense danger, ride away immediately.” He placed a knife in her hand. “Keep this.”
“What? I can’t leave without—”
Before she could finish, the demon walked away.
The tent appeared much larger than the one they shared in the Kabali encampment, and it seemed like a permanent one instead of a temporary structure.
There was a door at the entrance instead of a thick rug.
Her heart thudded as she saw the demon open the tent's door and go inside. The door shut shut due to the desert wind.
She badly wanted to break the demon’s command and follow him into the tent. But she knew if there was a possible attack inside, she would be in his way during the fight.
Biting her lip, with her stomach knotting anxiously, she waited.
After what seemed like forever, even though it must have been only a few moments, she saw the door opening, and the demon’s tall form stepped outside the tent.
Her stomach eased.
The demon approached her. Holding her waist, he picked her up, swept her into his arms, and carried her towards the tent.
“Where are we?” she asked. “And who does this tent belong to?”
“We are on the north side of the holy land,” he replied. “And this tent was set up by the Kabali clan many years ago and belongs to the Singoor temple.”
She was shocked.
The clan heir had been taking her towards the Singoor temple. She didn’t realize how close they had been to the holy land.
A shiver passed through her, realizing how easily things could have gone wrong.
“W-what happened at the meeting?” she asked, hoping there wasn’t any violence.
“All the clans agreed and signed a peace treaty.”
