When his muscular arm encircled her waist and pulled her closer, she knew she was going to spend one more night in his arms, feeling aroused and dreaming of him touching her, kissing her, and making her body come alive in ways only he could.
She closed her eyes tightly, knowing she had willingly made a promise and would have to bear the torture for a few more months.
I accepted him as my husband temporarily. But I still hate him.
Even as she told herself those words, her body shuddered when the demon’s calloused palm brushed against her bare stomach and moved up to cup her breast possessively as he held her to him while he slept.
CHAPTER 29
Nandini woke up from a restless sleep to freezing cold.
The heavy weight of the demon’s arm and the warmth of his body were gone. She opened her eyes and frowned.
Is it morning already?
It was still dark outside, and she could sense a few more hours remaining until sunrise.
Where did the demon go?
Just as she wondered, she heard shouts and activity from the encampment, followed by the smell of something burning.
Are they cooking at this strange time?
Something seemed off.
She got up hurriedly. Putting on the veil cloth around her shoulders and wrapping her arms around her to control her shivering, she stepped out of the tent.
Her heart dropped to her stomach when she saw high flames at a distance where most tents were set up in the encampment.
My God.
The tents were on fire. She immediately began to run towards the encampment.
The clan people were trying to put out the fire using water from the ponds and sand. But the fire was spreading rapidly due to the cold breeze at night.
Dragging her veil, she wrapped it across her face, covering her nose and mouth before joining a group of women passing water containers and splashing them over one of the tents. But even as she splashed water, she saw the fire spreading fast.
She looked up and saw a strange flare lighting up the sky. It fell right on the tent, where the horses and other animals were kept at a distance.
There is dry grass in there!
“There’s a fire in the stables!” she shouted and immediately began running towards the stables.
She had only reached midway when hard fingers wrapped around her wrist, stopping her with a jerk. She looked up to see a tall, broad figure whose body and face were nearly covered in soot, blending with the dark of the night. The burning grey gaze gave away his identity.
“Let me go!” she said. “I just saw a flare falling on top of the stables. We need to rescue the animals!”
But he held her with a firm grip. “Return to our damn tent and stay inside,” he commanded. “I’ll come to you later.”
The demon thought she was trying to escape.
“No!” she shouted. “I’ll not stay inside the tent. And I am not trying to escape. I’m trying to help!”
As though on cue, there was a strange sound followed by another flare falling on the tents.
“Rudra! Let me go! We can’t waste any time! The animals are in danger!”
His eyes blazed into hers, but he let her wrist go. He then let out a primitive cry and whistle, drawing the attention of his men before running towards the stables where the top of the tent had caught fire.
