Tay
I just figured you could use a fun night out. You looked so happy at the last game. Until you know, my brother got fucking FERAL.
Me
It was a lot of fun…
Me
Okay. I’m in.
Tay
Yay! Pick you up at 6!!
CHAPTER 18
SAWYER
It’s been almost a week since I went looking for Leah after my last game and wound up talking to my sister instead. Not that I don’t love getting to talk to my sister, but I’ve got a lot of shit to get off my chest and she’s not the one I need for that.
I’ve been doing my best to put as much of my focus into tonight’s game as possible, but I’m not sure how successful I’m going to be in doing so.
Because the girl of my dreams is in the stands again tonight.
She’s wearing a green sweater dress and a pair of short black boots. Her hair is curly—my favorite way to see it—and the radiant smile on her face is one I’ve missed more than I ever thought a person could miss a smile.
I’m hesitant to look around too closely, worried I may find that she’s here on a date again. But when I don’t see any Ghostbusters lurking around her, I make the assumption she came with Taylor tonight and continue warming up.
I lose count of how many times I have to tell myself to stop looking up in the stands after the puck drops. I need to keep my focus on the ice and get the win that my team deserves. Rooney, Matty, and I are all in sync tonight and when Roons passes the puck to me I waste no time slapping it right inside the top corner of the net. I stop dead in my tracks when I hear one very distinct voice cut through all the other noise.
“Way to score, thirteen!” My heart leaps when I see Leah cheering, eyes trained on me. I’m tempted to abandon the entire game just to go pull her into my arms and tell her I’ve waited my entire career to hear her cheering for me. But with only two minutes left in this period, I force myself to stay put and finish the game out strong.
I spent most of the game trying to think of a way to get Leah alone, and as soon as humanly possible, so I can finally talk to her. I’ve been dying to see her ever since the last game, and if I have to wait another minute to be near her, I’m going to lose my fucking mind.
Me
Can you come to the locker room?
Dove
Why????
Me
Please.
Dove
I’m not sure that’s a good idea. I’m not even supposed to be back there.
Me
Running out of time, Dove.
My heart is hammering so hard in my chest I can almost hear it. My knee bounces up and down relentlessly as I wait to see if she’ll show up or leave me hanging.
“Sawyer?” I hear her whisper through the barely cracked door.
