Then he opens another small box with the most beautiful necklace sitting inside.

“Sawyer, you just gave me the most magnificent engagement ring I’ve ever laid eyes on. You did not have to do this,” I tell him, feeling spoiled in a way I can’t quite fathom.

“This isn’t just any necklace. It’s uh…” He frowns then clears his throat. “Did you know they make custom jewelry from cremation ashes?” My eyes jump up to his from looking at what I thought was a pearl/diamond stone of some sort.

“You didn’t.” My voice is strained as tears come rushing back to the surface again.

“I asked your mom if she would be okay with it, and she was more than happy to allow me to have this made for you. I actually got one made for her as well…”

“Sawyer, this is the most thoughtful thing—” My emotions get the best of me and I’m unable to finish my sentence. He takes the necklace from the box and puts it on me, allowing me time to process the moment.

“Thank you, Sawyer.”

“I just thought he should be here for this.”

I don’t know what I ever did to deserve this kind of love.

“My sister is going to kill me for doing this a thousand miles away from her.”

“If we listen really closely, we might be able to hear her scream when she sees it,” Leah teases as she places her left hand on my chest with the water in the background as she holds her phone up to take a photo of her engagement ring. The smile on her face as she types away warms my heart. She’s beautiful, in every single way, and she’s mine.

She sucks in a deep breath and turns around to press her back against my chest as we await the responding texts.

“Hmm, eloping. There’s a thought,” I think aloud, catching a sassy side eye from my future wife.

“Nice try. Lauren will kick you in the balls. Taylor would probably try to shave your head and I’m not sure our parents would ever recover from the betrayal.”

“You always were the smart one.” I kiss her forehead, loving the way her eyes flutter closed every time I do. “Shouldn’t you tell your mom too?” I look down and frown.

“Well, I figured I’d tell her once we got home.”
