Page 95 of Worth the Risk

“Motion sickness, I guess?”

“You haven’t had that before?”

“No.”

“You were fine on the plane, and the entire drive back from San Francisco.”

Hannah looks at me, a deep groove between her eyes showing her obvious distress. “Don’t freak out, okay?”

I, of course, freak out. “What? What happened? Are you hurt? Did I do something? Do we need to get you to a doctor? The emergency room? What?”

“I said don’t freak out,” Hannah says with a light giggle. “Luca, I think I might be pregnant.”

Time stops.

I don’t know how long I stand there, staring at Hannah, but definitely long enough for the elevator to go down to the lobby and make it back up to my floor. Hannah has to forcibly drag me out of the elevator before I’m able to utter a single word. “What?”

“I worried this would happen,” she sighs.

“Pregnant? Seriously?” She nods. “When did you find out?”

“I haven’t actually found out anything, honey. My period is two weeks late. I was going to sneak out to get a test this morning, but then Mr. Crawford called us in, and we came here, and I figured I’d wait until tonight, or tomorrow, to take a test.”

“Fuck that,” I say, ripping my phone out of my pocket. “You can Instacart a dozen pregnancy tests, right?”

“What? Luca, no. A dozen? That’s absurd. One will do. And can you Instacart that?” Hannah asks.

“Yep,” I tell her, showing her the app. “Who knew?”

“Wait!” she shouts. “Shouldn’t we add anything else? I mean, they’re going to know it’s you and me, should we try to pad the order so it isn’t so obvious?”

I order six pregnancy tests and turn my screen off. Taking Hannah’s face in my hands, I stare down at her. “I don’t care who knows about us, Pixie. I want everyone to know that I’m taken. I want the world to see you as the one who completed me. But if you’re not ready for that, we can make Bennett go get it.”

Her eyes widen. “Oh shit! He’s still in your apartment!”

I chuckle. “I’m sure he’s enjoying all my good booze. It’s fine. Should we go tell him the good news?”

Hannah beams at me. “You know, I guess you were right.”

“About what?”

She carefully takes one of my hands, places it on her stomach, and covers it with both of hers. “We are definitely worth the risk.”

Absolutely.

Hannah

As I sit next to Luca, his leg jiggling so fast he’s shaking the entire bench, I realize he’s incredibly nervous. “What’s going on in that head of yours?”

He looks at me and gives me a sheepish smile. “Nerves, I guess.”

“When is the last time you were nervous before a game?”

He chuffs. “Shit, I don’t know. Actual nerves? Years ago. Generally I feel a ton of excitement to get on the ice, and adrenaline takes over. Feeling this nervous is different.”

“Why are you nervous?”

He sighs, his eyes roaming across the ice. He asked to come in here early and have a moment. It’s his first game back after everything that happened with Woodward. “I’m worried everyone will boo.”
