Anger filled Scottie, but she repressed it. “We like each other.”

Tara snorted. “He’s your boss.”

Scottie hated when she got all self-righteous. “Yeah, I know that, Tara. Thanks for reminding me.” She wanted to get out from under Tara’s judgmental eyes. Why couldn’t Tara support her? Encourage her?

Tara’s face softened, her pursed lips replaced by a slight curve. “Scottie, you can’t be involved with him.”

Scottie crossed her arms over her chest. Finally, after all the nagging she’d received about staying away from men, she’d found the nagging continued because it wasn’t the right man in Tara’s eyes. This was Scottie’s decision. She refused to feel bad about it, despite what Tara or anyone else would think. “And why not?”

“You work for him.”

“Is this really about you? About you worried I might have screwed up any chances you have to get jobs with Konrad’s friends?” Scottie had had it with Tara’s judgment.

Tara shook her head, more determined than ever. “I looked him up online.”

“So?” Scottie dropped her hands. The conversation was over as far as she was concerned.

“He has a lot of women. A lot.” Tara added quickly, “You won’t be the only one, and I’m afraid you’re going to be hurt. Really hurt.”

“Maybe I’m not afraid.” Scottie’s hands were shaking. “Maybe I want to see where it goes with him.”

“It’s not going to go anywhere.” Tara wasn’t backing down. Or stopping. “Do you want to see the pictures I found? He’s bedded half of River Oaks, and he hasn’t even been in Houston for a year yet!”

Scottie lifted her hand. “Stop.”

“Scott—”

“Why don’t you worry about your relationship and let me figure out mine.” Scottie turned, dueling emotions of anger and grief bringing tears to her eyes. Tara didn’t know Konrad. No one did. Scottie saw a glimpse of the real him, and she wasn’t going to give it up.
