“No need, they’re perfect.”
My cheeks heat, but my satisfied body doesn’t care that we did it in a studio.
We stop for something to eat, and once we’re seated, Kian says, “We have to talk about where we’re going to live.”
“Las Vegas,” is my immediate reply. “We have to get the baby’s room ready.”
“Wouldn’t you rather live in a house?” he asks as the server offers us the menus.
“A baby won’t need anything but love and food,” I say.
“I want to make this good.”
I reach for his hand on the table and offer a squeeze.
“And you’re amazing but we don’t need another home,” I try to reassure him.
“Sure?”
“Yes, why would we?” My brows knit together and his shoulders drop.
“Because…”
“It’s unnecessary.”
He grabs my hand as if to anchor me in the here and now.
“What then?”
“Face it.”
“Are you ready to hear it?”
I shake my head. I want to hear his story, but something is holding me back. I’m not completely over the trust threshold.
He sighs and runs a hand down his face, frustration rippling through him, the confession at the tip of his tongue and I hate my selfishness at this moment. But we’re good right now, why dampen it with the past?
After we eat, he says, “Let’s get home.”
He intertwines our hands, and we amble to the car.
The car ride home lulls me to sleep, and before I know it, we’re home again. I feel weightless as he carries me in the house and places me on the couch.
When I open my eyes, I find him bent over his laptop, his fingers typing away. I squint and my heart speeds up when I see Melanie’s name on the email address. He snaps his head in my direction and my face must resemble a beet because my cheeks suddenly feel very warm.
He pushes his laptop more to me. “We don’t want you to break your neck,” he teases.
“I wasn’t even looking,” I lie, pull myself up in a sitting position, and cross my arms over my chest.
He raises an eyebrow, aware I am lying.
“Hmm, if you say so.”
“What does she want?” I jut my chin up, looking him straight in the eyes.
He purses his lip, but amusement still dances at the corners.
“Melanie sent me a pitch and a business plan.”
