I stroke his cock once and feel him shudder under my touch. “It’s a happy one. You want to make me your wifey.”

“Do you want to be my wifey?”

“If you're still alive by that time and I haven’t killed you…yeah.”

“Don’t tease me, Laynee. I’ve—”

“I love you,” I reveal quickly before I chicken out. “I’ve always been in love with you, idiot. You were the only man I wanted to be with. You were the only man I could ever see myself grow old with, and not have second thoughts. You’re my other half.” I stroke his lower half firmer and quicker. “Plus you make me happy.”

His whole face lights up, the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen on him as he swims closer. “Say it one more time.”

“You’re an idiot.” His lips dip under the water, hiding whatever expression just spread across them. “I fucking love you, Cal Harper.”

He comes up from the water to press a kiss to my lips and, in the process, grinds his rigid length between the apex of my legs. I squeeze him tighter to me, getting any piece or inch of him against me because he quickly flips the switch from my being mad to annoyed to completely driven by lust for him.

“There’s something I want to do,” he says into my mouth. “Will you come with me?”

“Is this the part when you take me out in the middle of the woods and—” He splashes me with water to shut the rest of my thought up.

“C’mon.”

Inside my cabin, Laynee follows me, sopping wet without question. Curiosity has won out, and she’s dying to know what I’ve wanted to do for what seems like an eternity, and now that she’s said those three words, something snapped within me that it was just the right time.

“Laynee,” I voice, turning around in my kitchen to look down at her. “I’m firing you as my assistant.”

Her face slowly falls to the floor as her brain catches up with her mouth. “What…do you mean?”

“I mean, if we’re going to make this work, I don’t want your name dragged through the mud as you sleeping with the boss”—I drop my voice with a sigh—“since it means so much to you.” She rolls her eyes. “Also, that the only reason that you’re able to run around my company freely is because you’re fucking me.”

She blinks at me as if the words aren’t sticking.

“Office whore is what I’m thinking Veronica will spread around the office.”

She glowers at me, but it’s half-ass. “I said I love you and you’re firing me?” She props her a hand on her hip. “Really, Cal, I thought I was gonna get more benefits out of this.”

I chuckle because she’s going to procure more than she ever thought she was going to gain. “You’re going to work with Elliott again.”

“You want me to sleep with Elliott?”

She’s teasing me, I know. Shit’s still not funny, though.

“Fuck around and find out, Peabody.”

That glare from seconds ago tightens. “I swear to God, if you keep calling me that, Cal Harper—”

“I can’t wait to hear what you’re going to do to me, baby, however let me finish.”

“Oh”—Her blues rise exasperatedly to the ceiling—“I can’t wait to hear it.”

“You’re going to be Elliott’s assistant and continue doing what you did before.”

Her focus sharply slices back up to mine. “You’re sending me off to Miami?”

“Laynee, you must be out of your goddamn mind.” I hit her with a glower, because seriously? “Were you out in the sun too long today and fry half your brain cells, woman? I just got you back, why the hell would I send you off somewhere that I couldn’t reach you?”

“I mean…I wouldn’t mind it.” She shrugs, pushing her lips out in thought. “Never been—”

“I think you’ve had enough radiation going to your head for awhile, apparently. And Elliott is staying in Chicago for a while longer. I still need him as my COO, and he needs the help. Veronica isn’t going to do a thing but try to seduce him into bed with her.”
