Straightening my spine, I stride towards Wade, whose blue eyes are already watching my every step.
Out of the corner of mine, I see Nathan turn his body like I'm going to stop and speak with him, but I don't halt my steps until I'm right in the governor's space.
“I’m going to need you to come with me, Governor,” I mutter, looking down at him.
“For what?”
I give him a playful wink. “You’ll see.”
You son of a bitch.
He looks down the table. “I’m hosting a—” I lean closer to him, letting the dude next to him get a nice view of my ass—he’s welcome—as I play out my next words in his ear.
“I need you now,” I grit out. “So follow me out of here quickly because I can’t wait. I’ll have my car pulled aroun—”
“My car,” he cuts in, dabbing his chin with his napkin. “Unless we’re going to your place, Miss Shelton.”
I pull my face back to find him looking up at me innocently while remaining silent as a church mouse. My stomach feels like a butterfly house and they just went bat-shit crazy.
“Make it quick,” I force out.
Instead of waiting for him to make another comment, I turn on my heels and stride from the room, not bothering or having the damn time to say goodbye to everyone.
Yeah, he’s leaving with me publicly but, you know what, I don’t give a shit. I have kids with powder under their noses and humping like rabbits in a freezer where food is stored for other people to eat.
I call for Wade's car, and as soon as it pulls up, he appears at my side.
“After you,” he states, extending his hand for me to climb into the passenger side of his blacked-out SUV.
Once we take off, I tell him where the party is, and he says he knows the spot. The vehicle is silent as we cruise off, my stomach starting to form knots at the thought of what the hell is even going on over there.
“What happened?” Wade asks. “Because I know we aren’t about to go makeout again somewhere.”
I squeeze my thighs together, stifling back a heavy exhale.
He’s still thinking about it too.
I've tried not to, failed horribly, which is something that irritates me, and I've been dodging him ever since. I have a year contract with this man, and I'm not about to bail out of it just to lose my payday and owe him money.
"The mother of the birthday girl left the party, and now they've broken out the drugs and alcohol."
“And what are you going to do, shut down the party?”
I scoff. “Nope. I’m going to take it.”I feel him look over at me as I keep my eyes straight ahead on the road.
“What are you, a canine?”
A mirthless chuckle leaves my lips. “Something like that.”
“You’re something alright,” he mumbles low enough that I barely hear him.
My head snaps to him, and I can't hide the corners of my lips as they lift. "You're mad."
"I'm not mad." Still no eye movement away from the road, but he grips the steering wheel until his knuckles turn white.
“Yeah, you’re really mad.”
“I just said I’m not mad.”
