I’m not going to lose my shit in the middle of Happy Hour with my best friend.

“Can you do it or not, Miss Shelton?”

“I’ll need some of her—do you know any of her friends?”

No.

“Is she dating anyone?” she continues.

“Not that I’m aware of—no.”

“Who do you want me to invite exactly?”

“I’ll get you ten people, including myself and you, can you manage that?" I gripe. Chase furrows his brows at me and shakes his head as he finishes his beer.

“What day?”

“Saturday.”

“I won’t be able to make it.”

“Why?”

“Did you forget today already?” she seethes.

Not for a minute, Sox.

“I have that birthday party. The one where you’re getting Harry Styles to show up for me.”

“Don’t you have an assistant? And Mila, who I just got to work for you?” I chide. “Do you need to hold their—”

“This party is a big deal to me, Governor. Our arrangement that I signed was for you not to interfere in—”

“It allowed you to keep working on other events while working for me,” I retort. “Not to—”

“Which I am,” she retorts. “And I need to be present. At least for a little while.”

“Then you’ll be a little late.”

“I’m not at your beck and call. This event has been in the works for—”

“Miss Shelton, I honestly don’t care how long it’s been. I would appreciate you doing this for Em. I’ll add a bonus to your paycheck for the inconvenience.”

“Your money isn't going to buy my fucking time all the—"

I turn my body around in my chair and lower my voice. “I thought you weren’t basic, Miss Shelton. Remember that Emmy got you this amazing opportunity.”

A brief silence fills the other line, and a softer voice sounds. "I'm not saying that I don’t want to do it. I’m just saying—”

“Thank you, Miss Shelton. Call me with the details for me to finalize tomorrow.”

Then I hang up. It’s better for the both of us—mainly me.

Her tone, the way that it sounded like I annoyed her because I called was utter bullshit. I didn't kiss her, she kissed me, and now she wants to act like I just inconvenienced her ass. When she's been doing it to me since day fucking one.

“You need to chill,” Chase decides to comment. “She’ll quit.”

“She has a year contract with me, she quits, she owes me money.”
