Chapter 75
Eli
Showered, clean, and dressed in fresh clothes, I walk down to the medical building to meet Kellan. He pushes away from the wall when he sees me.
“And why am I here?” My question comes out irritably. My day has been a fucking nightmare so far.
“Miles thinks you pushed him into the pool.”
I tip my head up and stare at the sky, huffing out a breath. “What the fuck am I? The bogeyman who is responsible for every fucking thing that happens?”
“I told him it wasn’t you, but he’s convinced it wasn’t an accident. I said I’d prove it to him.”
“How?”
“By you coming here and telling him you didn’t do it.”
“Ever heard of lying?” My voice is dry.
“Did you do it?”
“No.”
“Well, there we go. I know you didn’t do it. You know you didn’t do it. Now we just need to tell Miles.”
I roll my eyes. “Whatever. Let’s get this over with. I need to drive into town and buy clothes.” I pause and glance at him. “Actually, you need to drive me into town for clothes. My car isn’t back yet.”
“Fine.” He chuckles. “I’ll take you shopping after we speak to Miles.”
I follow him through the doors, and he pauses just before we enter the room Miles is in. “Could you do something for me?”
“What’s that?”
“Tone down the …” He waves a hand up and down in front of me, and smirks. “Tone down the whole ‘I’m going to fucking eat you with a rusty spoon’ vibe.”
I snort. “Didn’t realize I had that kind of vibe.”
He winks at me. “Eli, you have that monster vibe down so strong I’m pretty sure the bears in Wharton Forest would think twice about going up against you.” He rests his hand on the doorknob. “Seriously, though, Miles isn’t a bad guy.”
“And you like him,” I say softly.
Kellan smiles. “And I like him.” He pushes the door open and swaggers inside, a cocky grin firmly in place. “Hello, darling boy. Did you miss me?”
A groan comes from the bed. “Why are you always so … upbeat?”
“It’s part of my charm.” He rounds the bed and kisses Miles’ cheek. “Now, don’t freak out. I brought Eli to talk to you.”
“What? Kellan, no!”
“Oh, for fuck’s sake.” I stride inside and kick the door shut. “Contrary to popular belief, I’m not about to gut you and eat your liver for lunch.”
Kellan waggles a finger at me. “Play nice.”
“Kellan says you think I pushed you into the pool.”
Miles’ eyes dart from Kellan to me and away again. “Did you?”
“No. Why the fuck would I do that?”
