My stomach sank a little, but I understood. Having a wall between us was a good way to make sure we didn’t stray into dangerous territory.

When he’d read it to me in the basement, it was a struggle to stop myself from overheating, so after what happened last night, it’d be even harder.

At least if I was in my bed alone, I could lay back and enjoy the experience. And if my hands just happened to stray somewhere, he’d be none the wiser. It was perfect.

I fired off a reply with my number. Seconds later Theo texted me to confirm he’d call in five minutes. I took a sip of water from my glass and slid back under the covers.

The countdown was on for adult story time and I couldn’t wait.

I shouldn’t have replied to Jess’s email.

I shouldn’t have told her I was addicted to her favourite book.

And I definitely shouldn’t have agreed to read chapter 21 to her.

But I seemed incapable of saying no to this woman. She was under my skin and I just wanted to do whatever it took to make her happy, no matter what the consequences.

After I’d left Jess at the beach, I’d come back to my room to work, but I couldn’t concentrate. I didn’t want that to be goodbye. There was so much I wanted to know about her. But I knew I couldn’t.

I hated the fact that she was supposed to be my competition.
