‘He’s lucky I’m in a hurry.’ I took a quick photo. I needed Mia to see this, so she’d know that her losing had nothing to do with her ability. And to think that bitch Gillian had tried to blackmail Mia too. ‘Let’s go.’ I turned and headed to the exit.

Nate and I got separate taxis. I needed to get to Mia’s place ASAP. It was only when the driver parked outside her building that I realised I didn’t know which number she lived at.

I called her. The phone rang out.

I tried again. Still no answer.

‘Can you wait here?’ I handed the driver some cash.

‘Okay.’

If I had to knock on every damn door to find her, that was what I’d do.

There was no one in the first flat. The person in the second one I tried cracked the door, then slammed it shut when she realised she didn’t know me. An old lady opened up on my third attempt.

‘Sorry to bother you, but I’m looking for Mia. Do you know what flat she’s in?’

‘Who wants to know?’ She folded her arms.

‘Erm, I’m Liam, Liam Stone, and we kind of dated and…’

She narrowed her eyes, looked me up and down and then her eyeballs popped out of her sockets.

‘You’re that actor! The one in the papers! I didn’t recognise you! But you broke up, didn’t you?’

‘Sort of. Long-distance stuff, y’know. But I’m trying to find her, so if you can just tell me what number she lives at, I’ll—’

‘D’you want to come in and have a cup of tea?’

‘Mrs…’

‘It’s Mrs Reynolds, but you can call me Crystal.’ She grinned.

‘I’d love to, Crystal, but I have to catch a flight in a few hours, so I really need to find Mia.’

‘Oooh, you’re going after your girl! Just like in the movies! Flat seven, first floor.’

‘Thank you!’

I raced up the stairs, then along the hallway. Once I found Mia’s flat, I knocked on the door. Once. Twice. Then a third time.

Shit.

I tried calling her again. No luck.

She must be out.

But I’d travelled over five thousand miles to see her, so there was no way I was giving up that easily.

And just like that, an idea hit me.

I knew exactly how to find her.

Mia

‘You’re what?’ I gasped. I couldn’t believe what I’d just heard. ‘But you two are the perfect couple. You just celebrated your tenth anniversary!’
