“If there’s nothing else, the schedule’s on the wall.” Kane wraps up the meeting. As everyone’s leaving, he points his finger at me and crooks it. After I get close enough to speak, he flings out one name, “Erzulie.”
I hold up my hands and back away. “No.”
Kane crosses his arms. “You don’t even know what I’m about to ask.”
“Does it matter? When that ball of trouble is involved, anything’s game.”
“I wish I could disagree with you.” A tic begins to beat at his jaw. “I take it you haven’t seen the schedule.”
“I glanced at it.”
“She and Beckett are slated to go to Redemption tonight.”
I groan, knowing what’s coming. “Come on. What did I do to get stuck with the two of them alone?”
“Do I look stupid?”
“No,” I admit begrudgingly.
“That’s why there will be a team of four of us going. That being said, I need my best with me when we’re going to a place with as many dark spots Redemption has.”
I mentally kiss the thought of apologizing to Austyn goodbye. “Shit.”
“You heard what I said to Chin. The job comes first.” Kane is relentless.
“You don’t have to tell me that.”

I dip my spoon into the pint of ice cream just as Trevor asks, “Do you want to talk about it?”
“What’s there to say,” I reply brightly. Too brightly. I shove the ice cream in my mouth.
“Where did he take you?”
I wave the now empty spoon around and swallow before I jam it back into the carton of triple chocolate. “Some French place.”
Trevor laughs. “At least you could read the menu.”
“True. But when I ordered salt encrusted fish, I didn’t expect it to be the whole damn fish. Oh, stop laughing!” I fling bits of ice cream at him from my spoon.
Trevor just grins. I continue haughtily. “There were eyes. I don’t feel it’s couth to serve... consumables... that can stare you down.”
By now, my roommate is doubled over on the sectional. “You’re killing me. What about when they serve the little baby calamari whole?”
“That’s a negative, Ghost Rider. Besides, how do you get those wayward tentacles in your dipping sauce?” I relax a bit and scoop another bite into my mouth.
