She places her hand on her chest. “You’ve never told me that before.”
I shift in my seat. This isn’t the conversation I want to have. It will only leave me battered and bruised.
I sigh. At the end of the day, I want to resolve all these built-up feelings I’ve had over the last few weeks. I’ll get to the part about her being pregnant in a minute.
“Yes, I have told you before, but that’s not the point.”
She slides her hand over my knee and squeezes it. I want to pick it up and kiss it all over.
“When did you tell me you loved me, Jami? I think that’s something I would’ve remembered.”
I shake my head and resign from keeping my secret. “Not if you had been roofied at the time.”
It takes her a second to get what I’m saying.
It hits her, and her eyes widen. “That night you took care of me? You told me then?”
I nod. As if I didn’t have a choice, my hand moves over the top of hers. I should be talking about so many other things than this, but my heart is ruling this conversation. One night with her destroyed all my self-control, which is why I’ve avoided her these last two weeks.
She pulls her hand away and I instantly want it back. “Jami, why didn’t you say something the next morning? I asked you if anything happened and you said nothing did.”
“Hunter showed up before I had the chance.”
That name alone makes me want to take Dori away and leave this town. She sits for a minute and thinks. My guess is she’s trying to remember that night. She picks up her wine and takes a big drink. It reminds me of why I’m here.
“Look, I don’t know if you should be drinking.”
She shakes off the thought she was having. “It’s a glass of wine. It won’t hurt.”
“I’m going to try this again since the first time I brought it up, you practically kicked me out the door so I could go meet Hunter. That meeting is over, so it’s time we discuss this. Is there a chance you could be pregnant?”
“I don’t know.” She places her wine down. “Maybe.”
I asked the question, but her answer still sends shock waves through my heart. I half expected her to avoid it again. If she’s having suspicions she could be, there’s a good reason for it.
My heart thumps harder. “What do you mean, maybe?”
“It means there could be a chance.” She peers over at me, her face red and eyes swimming in doubt.
My body goes numb. “Are you late?”
She rolls her lips between her teeth.
Fuck, she is.
I turn my head away as I take a deep breath and decide what I’m going to do next. If she is, Hunter will ruin me.
“It’s probably nothing to worry about. I’m only a couple of days late.” She sounds like she’s trying to convince herself.
My blood races through my veins. “But you haven’t been feeling well. You almost fainted earlier. I know you’re on the pill, but this happened before.”
“I know.” She stares down at her lap. “With the accident and my brother, I forgot.”
“You forgot what?”
“To bring them to Denver. With Aiden so sick and all the stuff happening with Hunter finding out about us… I wasn’t thinking when I was packing and I accidentally left my pills at home.”
My adrenaline surges through my body. “So you missed a full week?”
