He kisses my shoulder. “Thank you for trusting me and allowing me to show you what I am.”

Silence takes over the room as we settle into the new version of us. I know we have to talk about what it looks like, but I don’t want to get into all of the specifics right now.

We’re too tired and stressed. Granted, less stressed than before, but we still have to figure out how to get back to civilization tomorrow. I relax into his arms and let the night take me away.

Pounding on the door startles me awake. Remnants of last night still cling to me as adrenaline takes over. The room is bright and considerably warmer. Jami jumps up and wraps a blanket around himself. He glances at me with a sense of protection flashing in his eyes.

I pull the blankets up to hide under them. “Who could that be? Nobody knows we’re here.”

His facial features are tight and strained. He shrugs and shakes his head. “Stay here. I’ll go find out.”

CHAPTER 21

JAMISON

This has Hunter’s suspicious signature written all over it. I should be relieved someone’s here at the abandoned cabin, but nothing about it makes me think this was a fortunate coincidence. I get to the door and find a state trooper on the other side of the glass.

We make eye contact, but he turns away when he realizes I’m wrapped in a blanket and nothing more. His voice travels through the broken window.

“Get dressed. Then meet me out here when you’re done.” He steps off of the porch, kicking pebbles off the walkway as he does.

There’s no way someone could’ve found us this fast, but I hurry to get dressed. Dori will be relieved, though, so I focus on that.

It would’ve been better to have time to discuss last night with her before the chaos of the day starts, but nothing is easy or just given to us when it comes to being with her. The sooner I get that through my head, the better it’ll be.

Once I’m dressed, I go tell Dori there’s a cop at the door. I toss her clothes onto the bed. She jumps to her feet, ready to leave.

“Now that’s some luck. Wouldn’t you say?” She stands there bare-fucking-naked before me.

My lust, my sweet temptress, my person, naked and an arm’s length away. Yet she’s still too far to get to.

I groan. “Yeah, some luck.”

She notices I’m staring at her and quickly growing a hard-on. Her cheeks blaze red-hot. She freezes and waits for something. What that is, I have no idea.

Fighting all my primal needs, I turn to the door. “I’m going to go talk with him.”

“I’ll meet you out there once I’m dressed.” She grabs her bra off the bed as I walk away.

If I had any luck, this cop would’ve shown up around lunchtime. I run my hand over my cheek and assess how long my beard is getting.

It’s time for a shave.

His back is to the door when I open it. “Good morning.”

He turns to face me. “Is it? If that car up the road is yours, I wouldn’t think you’d say that.”

He steps closer to me. He’s not a big guy, but he has some big dick energy coming off of him.

“I’m Jamison Stone and that car is my rental. I hit a deer last night and didn’t know what to do. The woman I’m with was soaking wet and on the verge of hypothermia. I did what I had to and broke in to get her into a warmer shelter.”

I place out my hand for him to shake and show him the respect he deserves. “I’ll pay for the damage to the window and for the trouble of our stay here.”

He shakes my hand. “She happen to have red hair?”

“Yes. Why do you ask?”

“We had report after report of a possible accident up here. The description of the driver was a woman with red hair.” He hangs his thumbs on the edge of his pants pocket.
