“Bella,” my mother calls out as she walksher frail body from her room to the lounge. “Is that you?” Her gazeis locked on the floor, ensuring she doesn’t stumble and fall.

“Yes, Mama,” I call back, watching herstruggle to take each step.

“Who is this?” she asks once reaching us andseeing that I am not alone.

“Aiden Black,” the Alpha introduces himself.“Pleased to meet you.”

My mother assesses him with eyes that aresharper than they should be in her condition. It seems she ishaving one of her better days. I know she hasn’t had her medicationtoday because I still need to get to a pharmacy.

I see her sway before grabbing her arm andleading her to her favorite chair. “Sit, Mama. Before you fallover.”

“Why are you here?” my mother asks Aidenignoring me completely but still sitting down.

“Do you know where you daughter was lastnight?”

I feel a blush burn on my face. “I do,” mymother replies, squaring her shoulders. It doesn’t matter whatanyone says or thinks, she won’t feel ashamed of me for doing whatneeded to be done to keep us alive.

Aiden nods. “The Sanctuary is my business.Bella and I have come to an arrangement. Both of you will be livingwith me from now on and I will be taking care of all your medicalcosts. Bella is worried for your health and well-being, and I canafford the best doctors in the world.”

My mother’s eyebrows lift into her hairline.“And why would you do such a thing?”

Aiden smiles widely and if I didn’t knowbetter, I would think he likes her. “Because your daughter is nowbound to me. She is mine and the things that matter to her, matterto me.”

My mother chuckles rolling her eyes. “You’reone of those.”

“One of what?” he asks.

“An Alpha who thinks an omega is justanother possession. You’ll learn.”

Chapter Seven

Aiden

Her mother reminds me of my own. Such ahardass and no filter between her brain and her mouth. She willcertainly keep things interesting.

“Is there anything you want to take withyou?” I ask Bella, looking around the apartment. “Everything youleave behind can be replaced.”

“Not everything,” Bella says before headingto one of the rooms.

She comes back out with a bag slung over hershoulder and a shoebox in her hands. I raise a questioning brow, but she is already speaking to her mother in hushed tones. I don’tcatch the conversation as my cell phone rings, and I answer it.

“Owen,” I answer. “Are you on your way?”

“I think you sent the wrong address, myfriend,” he replies with a Scottish lilt to his voice. “This placeis a dump.”

“It’s the right place. Don’t worry, we won’tbe here long.”

Ending the call, I open the door that leadsto the landing on the second floor, waiting for one of the few menI count as a friend. Owen assesses me with a sharp gaze when hesees me standing in the doorway.

“I know you can be a little excentric attimes, but this is a little much even for you.”

I roll my eyes at his words before gesturingfor him to enter the apartment. Owen does exactly what I did when Ifirst walked in and I know what he is seeing. Everything isrun-down and old but clean. It’s easy to see they are fighting tokeep their heads above water but they haven’t given up justyet.

“Look, Bella,” Mrs. Connors says with asmirk. “Another handsome Alpha in our home.”

A low growl claws its way up my throatcausing Owen to laugh. “You must be Dehlia,” he says, shaking herhand lightly before kissing her knuckles. “It’s a pleasure to meetyou.”

“Oh, my,” She fans at her face while Bellagiggles.
