Ellen felt a tingle of excitement at the thought.
‘Yes,’ she said.
‘Shall I book you somewhere?’ asked Weis hesitantly.
Scott’s eyes were wide, and Ellen could see he was bursting to speak.
‘That would be great, thanks.’
‘Let me know when you’re arriving.’
‘Yes. I’ll speak to Ryan and get back to you.’
Ellen clicked off her phone and then tried Ryan again only to get his voicemail. She huffed and then tried Peter. His voicemail clicked in too.
‘Doesn’t anyone answer their phones any more?’ she grumbled.
‘Are you going to Porthaven?’ asked Scott. ‘I think I should come with you. Ryan will be in tomorrow.’ ‘Someone has to be in the office,’ she said.
Scott sniffed.
‘I’m always in the bloody office.’
Chapter Fifty
Abby
I’m close to hysteria and nothing Jared and Joe say is calming me. It’s been nearly two hours since he phoned.
‘What if something has happened to him?’ I say, checking my phone again.
He’d said he would phone in an hour. It’s been almost two.
‘I’m calling the police,’ I say, pulling my phone off its charger.
‘No,’ shouts Jared, snatching it out of my hands. ‘Maybe he’s unable to phone. It doesn’t mean something has happened to Sam and Mum.’
I drop my head into my hands. I don’t understand. I thought once we had the money he would come and get the box and release Sam and Daphne.
‘I don’t understand what’s happening?’ I cry.
At that moment my phone bleeps and I click into it.
‘Yes,’ I say eagerly.
‘Abby?’ asks a familiar voice and my heart sinks.
It’s Sergeant Burden. I want to scream at her to get off the line. What if the man is trying to call me? I hang up without answering. I can’t allow the line to be blocked.
‘Was it him?’ asked Joe, looking confused.
‘It was that police officer from the island.’
‘Shit,’ said Jared. ‘Did you just hang up on her?’
‘Well what the fuck would you have done?’ I scream.
The phone trills again. The number comes up. It must be her again. His number is always withheld.
