Page 97 of She Saw What He Did

‘Well, this is all very interesting, but I don’t see that it matters if we went to the wrong place or not. We still saw the murder.’

‘No, you’re right. It doesn’t,’ agreed Weis with a smile. ‘We’re just curious what it was you found.’

‘It was nothing much if I remember,’ said Jared.

Ellen looked at Abby.

‘I don’t remember,’ she said, avoiding Ellen’s eyes.

‘It was a while ago now,’ agreed Jared. ‘We certainly don’t still have it.’

Ellen finished her tea.

‘If you should remember, you will let us know?’ she said.

‘Are you any closer to finding the killer?’ asked Jared.

Ellen sensed some hostility in his voice.

‘We’re doing our best,’ said Weis, standing up. ‘We have a lead. It’s discovering the motive that’s our problem.’

Ellen took Weis’s cup and placed it on the tray with her own.

‘I’ll take these back,’ she said.

‘There’s no need,’ said Abby, jumping up.

‘It occurred to me,’ said Ellen. ‘That maybe whatever it was you found may well have been what the killer wanted.’

‘And the Ukrainian come to that,’ added Weis.

‘Like I said, we can’t remember what that was. So I’m sure it wasn’t that important to kill someone for.’

‘It’s a theory,’ smiled Ellen, looking Abby directly in the eyes. Abby lowered hers and picked up the tray.

‘We’ll leave you in peace,’ said Ellen, walking to the door.

Weis shook hands with Jared and Abby, and followed Ellen into the hallway.

‘Oh, by the way, how is your mother-in-law?’ asked Ellen.

Abby looked to Jared who seemed to sway.

‘She’s fine,’ he said, but Ellen thought his voice was strained.

‘Good security you have here,’ Weis commented.

Jared laughed.

‘Our insurance company demand it,’ he said.

Weis nodded and followed Ellen out.

He was at the gate when he heard the locks being turned.

‘Insurance companies don’t demand that many locks,’ he said.
