Twenty Six
Cole
We’re sitting outside my apartment, and I’m trying to figure out something to say to get Sal up to my apartment.
It’s not that dinner with his father stirred up any crazy romantic feelings between us, those are already there for me.
But I want more time with him. My heart wrenches at the thought of standing on the curb as his vehicle tears away in the dark.
The thought of our time ending and the mental image stirred in my mind propels me to risk opening the door to vulnerability.
“Will you come upstairs and have coffee with me on the patio?”
“Aren’t you tired?” he asks, turning his body to face me.
His expression is hard to read. My gaze traces along his hard jaw line up to meet his gaze.
“Not really.” I glanced at the clock. “It’s only 9 pm.”
Mild amusement shows up in his features mainly by way of his eyebrows lifting.
He looks tired.
“Unless you wanna have a quickie out here in your car.”
The silence between us causes my head to dizzy.
What the fuck did I just ask?
My mind flashes back to Sal watching me and Danny in that cherry red charger.
Is he thinking about that too?
“Come on,” I say, climbing out from the passenger side, biting my tongue to stop myself from saying more stupid shit.
Does he think all I want is sex now?
I mean I do want sex, but… oh god he isn’t moving.
Despite his reluctance, he eventually gets out of the car, locks it and follows me inside.
I am quick to start the kettle and pull out tea and decaf coffee as if to prove I’m not just trying to seduce him.
Sal leans against the doorway to the kitchen, watching me work. I grabbed two mugs that are matching, ones that I made in a ceramics class with my last boyfriend. I’m not normally one to be sentimental, but I can’t bring myself to get rid of them.
“Coffee please,” he asks before I need to say anything.
Preparing the drink I pause to take him in.
“What?”
His tone is sharp.
“Nothing. You just look good.”
“Oh.” Unfolding his arms, he stretches his neck, some of the anger slightly dissipating from his muscles and face.
We take our steaming drinks to the patio and watch lights move across the semi lit roads. Darkness has descended on the night and there’s a bit of a nip to the air.
