Shit. That was confirmation.
“I figured you two would be a good match.”
His words make me smile! No! I’m supposed to be angry with him!
“If anyone asks, you tell them the truth, Sal. Tell them I was unaccepting! Tell them I was cruel to you. Just please, tell me what I can do to actually be in your life in a way you want me.”
The plea is genuine and it hurts to hear. I don’t want a father who has to beg for a spot in my life.
“I’ll have to think about it.”
“I understand.”
“Goodnight.”
“Goodnight, Torrey.”
Hearing the nickname given to me by my maternal grandmother and carried on by my parents and Cole, causes huge tears to stream down my cheeks.
Ending the call, I leave my phone on the couch and shuffle to the bedroom, flopping onto the bed and wrapping my arms around Cole. Sleep finally finds me.

Tony is practically vibrating next to me with anticipation
“Where’s Bella?” I ask, as I tug at the black bowtie threatening my sanity.
“She’s going to meet me there later. Apparently plus ones aren’t invited until later.”
“Oh.”
I wouldn’t know because my plus one is riding with us in the limo.
“You look hot,” Tony says with a wink.
Shaking my head, I scoff. “Are you sure you’re straight?”
Tony pushes me. “I’d be bi for you.”
We both laugh at how ridiculous he is.
“I bet Bella wouldn’t appreciate that,” I add.
He simply shrugs. “She’s pretty open minded.”
“You two seem way too chill!” Rumi says, taking a deep breath.
She’s wearing the sparkliest purple gown and lipstick to match.
“Wow, you look great!” Tony says.
“What he said,” I add.
“Where’s Kahlid?” I ask, scanning the work parking lot.
We’re all standing here dressed for the gala and waiting for Sal… the boss and Kahlid.
