Page 70 of Nothing Without You

‘No way,’ Chris replied, ‘you just threw out. It’ll just be a bream.’

‘No. It’s big. Really big.’

Chris watched her with disbelief as she put her head back and laughed. ‘Don’t look at me like that. It’s not my fault I get the big fish.’ She splashed water at him with her foot, giggling at the look on his face. ‘It’s all about how and where you cast. I’ll teach you one day.’

‘You haven’t caught it yet.’

‘No, but I will.’

They grinned at each other and he splashed water back at her. ‘You and me, and Saltwater Place. I tell you, Evie, the sun is shining now.’

She started humming the tune of Evie while leaning back and winding hard. When the fish neared the shore she turned to Chris, her words clear and full of love. ‘You’re right Chris. The sun is shining now, and there’s nothing more I want other than Saltwater Place and you. I’ve come home.’
