Michelle cut her off. “No, I meant with men, getting back out there in the dating scene.” Vanessa gave her best friend a slightly irritated glance.
“I’m fine Michelle.”
Michelle turned in her seat to face her. “It’s been a year V. You can’t let one guy ruin it for all of them.”
Vanessa took a sip of her wine as she thought about Doug. Her relationship with him only lasted one year, but it was one year too long. Although he never physically abused her, the mental abuse was just as bad. His parents were filthy rich and wanted their son with the same dreams as them, sounded like her parents. She thought she was doing pretty good for herself on her own.
She met Doug out at a bar one night, which was a mistake in itself. Never meet your future husband at a bar, it doesn’t work for everyone. But he was successful and what woman wasn’t attracted to success? He was handsome and smart. Comfortable, with the stability she was looking for. Aside from that, the sex was just okay and they never really had that ‘spark’ she craved from a man. Let’s just say he was worried about his own needs instead of hers.
A man who was selfish in the bedroom? A big thumbs down.
Then, after Vanessa got promoted, he started making her feel like she wasn’t good enough for him. Which made absolutely no sense to her. Loving someone and then being bitter of their success? Not the true love she wanted.
He could only kick her down so much, before she could no longer get back up. So, she needed to do what was best for her and she decided it was time they broke up. Best decision she made and she couldn’t be happier without him.
But rushing back out on the dating scene wasn’t something she wanted right now. She wanted to focus on her and her career. Not even one-night stands interested her right now.
“I’m not letting him ruin it for me. I just don’t care about that stuff right now, especially now,” Vanessa said.
“Whatever, just make sure you remember to dust off those cobwebs down below before you do decide to get back out there.”
Vanessa threw her decorative pillow at her best friend and they laughed. It hadn't been that long. Well, maybe it had.
