He waits until I open my door and lock it behind me to leave. And I'm left wondering how much harder it will be to lose him if I continue to fall for him.
Chapter 7
Theo
Ican't get my goddess out of my mind. The spreadsheets and macros on Excel don't give me the same amount of joy they used to. I've only texted her in the mornings and before I go to bed because I don't want to crowd her. But I'm hungry for her—to know her and to love her. I don't think I've ever been this far gone with a woman in my life.
There's a knock on my door, and I mumble a quiet "come in" so that whoever is on the other side either comes in or thinks I'm not here and leaves. I want the latter, but I am not lucky enough for that.
"Can I have a word with you, Theo?"
My friend and business partner Erik is standing on the threshold of my office, asking for entry. He is really asking for gossip, but he means well.
"Hey, Erik. What's going on?"
"That's what I'd like to know. You've been more subdued than usual. Is anything wrong?"
"Yes and no. Close the door and sit down."
"Well?"
"I did a thing."
"Do I have to get the lawyers involved?" Erik frowns.
"No." I hesitate. "I don't think so."
"Maybe I can help, then."
"I think I'm in love."
"You aren't dating anyone, how can that be?"
"About six months ago, I signed up for a mail-order bride service, and eventually, they gave me a match. I've met her, and she's blown my mind by how perfect she is for me. I'm afraid I might be taking things too fast."
"You think?"
"I want to propose."
"What the actual… Don't do it. Let us meet her. We'll have a barbecue at Max's, and you can introduce her to us."
I agree and let Erik handle the preparations. I grab my phone and message my goddess.
Me: Saturday you're meeting my friends. Do you think you're up to that?
Helene: Hey, you didn't even ask!
Me: I'm sorry, it was a sudden invite and I'd like them to meet you. See how wonderful you are. Why I'm…
Helene: Why you're?
Me: The luckiest man in the world
Helene: xx blush xx. How do I need to dress?
Me: It's a barbecue, so casual and relaxed
Helene: Are you sure this isn't going to be like that time Sam and Darrin slummed it and the affair was formal after all?
