This is an epic mess, but I’m so happy Kade’s parents are alive and I hope he finds them. I truly do.
The truck slows down and my previous anxiety returns.
Moments later it stops and the back door swings open.
The man who took me comes into my view, then Parker steps up beside him.
My stomach heaves at the sight of him but rage surpasses the desire to vomit.
Parker smiles down at me and shakes his head teasingly. “Oh dear, this isn’t good is it?”
I tell him to fuck off but under the duct tape on my mouth my words are a mass of incoherent garblings.
With a crude smile he rips the duct tape off my mouth. It stings but I don’t care about the pain.
“You fucking bastard. Let me go.”
“Sorry, no can do. I’m using you as leverage. Kade won’t do what I want otherwise.”
“How can you do this? Kade is your godson.”
“Yes and I do wish things didn’t come to this for any of us. I was right, though. You’re so much like your mother. Always sticking her nose in places she didn’t belong.”
My eyes go wide. “It was you wasn’t it? You ordered the shooter to kill her.”
“Ubey etogo narushitelya spokoystviya seychas zhe,” he says answering my question.
It was him. That was what he said to the shooter— kill that troublemaker now.
“I suspected you were there that night. That you were the witness. But your father did a good job of keeping your name out of the records. I knew it was you from the way that you described the murder. Only a child who had lost their mother could talk in such a way.”
“You’re a monster.”
“I suppose I am.”
“Why did you want my mother dead?”
“She saw some things she shouldn’t have seen. Things I never wanted anyone to see. Things that could cost me everything if certain people found out. I got back at her, though. I had her killed when she threatened to expose me. It was a pleasure to watch her die.”
My throat goes dry and sweat beads from every pore in my body. “You are truly evil.”
“Don’t worry you’ll get to see her once I’m done with you.”
“Kade is going to kill you.”
“Not if I kill him first.”
With a deep, hearty laugh, Parker slams the back door, locking me in the darkness again.
My hopes flatline and although I try not to panic, I do.
If ever there was a time to panic, it’s now.
