“I told you.” Slater winked.

After a few more sips, Alex set his cup down.

It seemed they weren’t going to talk about last night. For now, Slater would let it go.

“If we’re going to be in public, I have to stop by my apartment first.” He gestured to his shorts. “I refuse to be seen in these.”

A purr threatened to escape as Slater admired the way they hugged Alex’s body, outlining his cock beneath the fabric. “If you didn’t want to be seen in them, why did you wear them?”

His mate shrugged and took another drink of coffee. “I wasn’t sure what we would be doing, so I wanted something with maximum flexibility.”

Slater chuckled as he heard the sound of a lawnmower starting up outside. “Do you want me to smuggle you out so my neighbors won’t see them?”

“Only if you roll me up in a rug so it’ll be obvious you’re carrying a body.” A teasing grin spread over Alex’s face. “Breaking news: Deputy Slater Kingsman spotted carrying a suspiciously shaped bundle in the wee hours of the morning. Stay tuned for updates!”

Slater shook his head with a grin. “You’ve been watching too much news.”

Alex hid his grin behind the rim of his cup. “Fine, be a spoilsport and let me just walk out the normal way instead.”

“Come on, suspicious bundle.” Slater set his coffee cup in the sink and turned off the machine. “Let’s head to your place and then go get some breakfast.”

His mate softly laughed as they made their way out the door.

A guy could happily overdose on that beautiful sound.

As soon as Alex walked through his apartment door, he gestured toward the couch. “You can have a seat. I promise I won’t take long.”

“Try not to smack your knees into anything while you’re in there.” Slater chuckled.

“Very funny.” Alex rolled his eyes but was thankful Slater hadn’t gotten angry about the accidental knee to the groin.

What blew his mind was the fact that Slater hadn’t wanted anything in return. What guy didn’t want some kind of release while they were fooling around?

None that he had ever met.

But Alex could tell Slater was different. Not just because of the selfless act last night or the mind-blowing kisses they shared but he also had a kind heart. When Slater had offered to show him how to fight, Alex thought for sure the guy would want to be paid for his services, but so far, Slater hadn’t mentioned anything about money.

Which was always in short supply with Alex.

After tossing his shorts onto the floor, Alex grabbed a pair of jeans. He still couldn’t believe he’d actually walked out of the house with those shorts on, let alone let Slater see him wearing them.

They were the shorts he wore when he cleaned his apartment.

Hastily throwing on a shirt, he made a mental note to shower later. Alex glanced at his phone lying on his bed, stunned he’d run out yesterday on his way to his lesson and forgotten it.

He was blaming it on Slater.

The guy was taking up way too much space in Alex’s head, probably with his feet kicked up, sipping on a fruity drink and basking in all the free real estate.

Did Slater allow Alex to take up too much space in his head too? The question made Alex think about last night. He no longer believed the beast was just a figment of his imagination. Slater had purred when they’d kissed both times, and after that mind-blowing hand job, his belief was solidified that the beast and Slater were one and the same.

That desperate yearning to surrender to it still throbbed inside Alex, and he could still feel the pull of its call.

He jumped slightly when his phone starting ringing, and then he blew out breath and forced the feeling of surrendering to the beast away. Swiping his phone off his bed, he saw it was his mom.

“Hey, Mom.” Alex didn’t think Slater would mind waiting a few more minutes while he talked to her. But he didn’t want to take too long. His hunger was growing, and he had his stomach set on chocolate chip pancakes.
