“Abe, we have a situation. Brian is at the daycare, and Sadie is there with the kids too,” I explained. “What are we going to do?”

“This is a tricky one.”

“Abe,” I began, “I think it’s time to call a pack meeting. We need to come up with a sensible plan together. This is a threat that affects us all, and we’re going to need every one of us to take Brian down. We can’t risk making a wrong move here.”

Abraham nodded, his support for the idea evident. “You’re right, Alpha. The pack needs to be united in this fight. We can’t let Brian’s influence tear us apart. Never, ever.”

“I’ll gather everyone,” Abraham affirmed. “Let’s work together to put an end to this. We will wait at the pack headquarters.”

As I contemplated the escalating threat posed by Brian and his malevolent influence, a thought crossed my mind–a thought of seeking aid from other pack leaders. Jesse, Alpha of the Crescent Moon pack, and Octavio, leader of the World Walkers, were powerful allies, and their support could be invaluable. We were trying to solidify our alliance, weren’t we?

But at the last moment, I made a decision–a decision to face this challenge as the Blackpaws, united and undeterred.

The pride and responsibility of being the leader of the Blackpaw pack weighed heavily on my shoulders. This was our problem, our struggle, and our responsibility. While allies and friends in other packs were important, this was a matter for the Blackpaws to handle on our own. I didn’t want Brian to be the issue that pulled us all apart. We couldn’t show weakness as well, just in case.

“Fuck,” I muttered to myself, shaking my head sadly. “This is a fucking nightmare.”

The weight of leadership, the challenges that loomed over our pack, and the malevolent threat of Brian–all of it felt like an insurmountable burden. The pressure was almost too much to bear, threatening to crush me beneath its weight. It was in those moments of doubt and fear that I turned to the one source of strength that had always sustained me–Sadie.

I closed my eyes and let her image fill my mind, her fiery spirit, her unwavering support, and her love. She was the beacon of light in the darkness, the unwavering anchor that kept me grounded when the world threatened to overwhelm me. Her presence in my thoughts gave me the strength to stand tall, to face our challenges, and to lead our pack through the storm that lay ahead. Gregory, too. I promised to care for him, to be there for him in every way possible, and that was what I would do.

Ring, ring… Ring, ring… Ring, ring…

I furrowed my brows and hit the answer button. “Helena?” What was going on now? Just as I was about to meet with my pack to save Sadie.

“I need you to come and meet me. Now.”

She wasn’t messing around. And I also couldn’t ignore this request. Not when she had been researching the ring for me. The determination in her voice worried me but felt like a step in the right direction as well. Time was ticking, and I knew that this was going to be a detour, but I hoped it would be a positive one.

“I’m on the way. Wait for me.”

I made my way to Helena’s dimly lit, cluttered office. The room was a labyrinth of ancient artifacts, books, and scrolls, a treasure trove of knowledge and mysticism that only she could navigate. The scent of old paper and incense lingered in the air as I knocked lightly on the ajar door, announcing my arrival. This was why she was the best person to investigate all of this, and I had all the hope in the world that she had something for me just in time, to save Sadie and everyone else.

Helena’s eyes, sharp and piercing, met mine as she peered over a dusty tome. She had a presence that commanded respect, the kind that came from years of delving into the arcane and the unknown. I was so glad that she was a Blackpaw. “James,” she said, acknowledging my presence with a nod.

“What do you have for me?”

Helena raised an eyebrow. “The ancient item that Brian has… It’s a dark artifact known as the Ring of Rasputin.”

The name sent shivers down my spine. Rasputin, the infamous mystic and advisor to the Russian royal family, was a figure steeped in legend and whispered tales of dark magic. Helena continued, “This ring was once in the hands of the Bratva-connected Wolves in Moscow. It holds immense power and is said to grant control over the minds and wills of others. Especially women, which makes a lot of sense considering everything that you have said to me.”

The gravity of the situation began to sink in. Brian had stolen this nefarious artifact, and the consequences were dire. If he possessed such power, the eerie transformation of everyone around me made horrifying sense. I leaned closer, my voice urgent. “What do we do about this ring then? How do we stop him?”

Helena nodded, determination etched on her face. “The only thing you can really do is get the ring off of him.”

Urgh, that was a nightmare. Pretty much what I thought we had to do, but it wasn’t going to be easy. “Do you have any advice for me?”

Helena carefully placed an image of the ring on her weathered wooden desk, its details etched with precision. The ring itself was a haunting work of art–a serpent with emerald eyes coiled around a pitch-black gemstone. As she began to describe its full powers, a cold shiver ran down my spine.

“The Ring of Rasputin,” Helena began, her voice filled with a solemn tone, “holds the power to manipulate the minds and wills of others. It can compel them to act against their true desires, pushing them to serve its master’s every whim. We’re going to have to plan carefully.”

My mind raced as I considered what we were up against. “But why didn’t it work on Sadie?” I questioned, my thoughts clouded with confusion. “Charlene’s transformation is proof that the ring has the power to control humans as well as wolves, so I’m confused.”

Helena took a deep breath, her eyes locked on mine. “James, the Ring of Rasputin has a unique limitation. It can’t be used to turn a woman against those an Alpha truly loves, and the bond between you and Sadie is true and strong. Her feelings for you are a shield against the ring’s dark influence.”

I couldn’t help but feel a rush of relief at the realization that Sadie was immune to the ring’s power. Our relationship, built on trust and genuine affection, was a force that could not be easily manipulated. It was a testament to the strength of our connection.

However, that understanding didn’t protect anyone else. Helena continued, “That’s why Charlene has become Brian’s pawn. I think you’re going to need me with you to help.”
