I shake my head and say, pointing at him. “That was mean.”

He grins and asks, “I thought you were done running away.”

He says it as a joke, but I can see the hint of concern in his eyes.

Seriously, you run away a few times, and you’re labeled a runner, and can you be classed as a runner when you return to said house every night?

Rolling my eyes, I reply, “I am. Besides, all of my things are now at James’. The man was slick and moved me in, including my dogs.” Breaker grins while Quinn hums and nods, having been in my shoes before.

I say, “I’m hoping to go see his momma.”

Quinn’s eyes soften, knowing this isn’t easy for me. She nods, then nudges Breaker.

“Drive her to Carol’s. I’ll stay with the kids and stall if anyone comes looking for her; Sarah will do the same inside.”

I nod, confirming Sarah has my back, making her smile before I look to the swings, hearing a child’s laughter. I smile when I see Noah gently pushing April, my hand going to my bump.

A baby bump, not cancer….

Damn.

“Are you sure, Brook?” Breaker asks, making me look his way.

I assert, “I’m sure. I think something more is going on with her, and I have a feeling it has everything to do with her relationship with Eagle.” He nods with a small, proud smile, which disappears when I state, “And James isn’t to know. This needs to be between me and Carol.”

Quinn grins, and Breaker groans. “Fuck’s sake, he’s going to have me in the ring, isn’t he?”

I laugh. I won’t confirm or deny, but I know the talk will be better with the two of us alone, and if James doesn’t find out, Breaker will be fine.

Sighing, Breaker stands, gives Quinn a kiss, wraps his arm around my shoulders, and states, “Come on then, Brook. The sooner I get you there and back, the sooner I can hide; my face is too pretty to bruise.”

I laugh with Quinn. and walk with Breaker to the club’s truck, hoping I’m not making a mistake.

I bite my bottom lip while standing outside Carol’s large, two-floor, Victorian-style home, which is three rows up from James’s. The lights are on, so I know she’s in, and I know Eagle is still at the club, sulking at the bar.

I saw his face; he believed his wife could harm me and my unborn child, and unfortunately for him, his wife saw it, too. Instead of sulking, he should be groveling at her feet. I know she’s done things, but I’m pretty sure an old man should stick by his old lady until proven guilty.

“You know, I’m beginning to get old here….” Breaker says, sighing.

I snort. “You are old, Breaker, compared to me,” I joke back.

“I am honestly, truly offended by that. I’m putting my life on the line for you.”

I laugh at his words and look his way with a grin. He grins, and I turn back around, taking a deep breath. “I’m going in…. You don’t have to wait out here, you know.”

He snorts. “Your old man is already going to want to fight me in the ring. If I leave, he’ll fucking stab me.”

I half smile, my eyes on the door slowly opening, and rasp, “My old man, huh?”

He hums and replies, “You never gave him the cut back, darling.”

I nod as Carol’s form comes into view. “I didn’t, did I….” causing him to hum back.

I guess a part of me knew we’d be back together. I just needed time to overcome my irrational fears.

I’m not my father, and neither is James. I’ll never allow him or myself to lose ourselves over pain.

Carol gasps when she realizes I’m standing at the end of her drive, and I slowly walk toward her.
