“Maybe I was looking for sympathy. I was hoping you would feel sorry for me and invite me over for another meal.”

I blinked at him and stopped his hands from traveling up any farther. “So, you played me?”

“I was desperate.” He moved his hand up and pulled on the back of my neck, bringing his mouth against mine. “I would have done anything to get another date with you.”

“Is that so?” I asked as he tried to give me a chaste kiss, but I arched my face away from him.

“Ava, don’t be a tease.”

I tapped his nose playfully. Sometimes our teasing turned into a competition to see who could get the other one worked up the fastest. He wasn’t going to win this round. “I think you need to be taught a lesson.”

“Why? It worked, didn’t it?” He wrapped his hands along my back, linking his fingers. “Besides, I didn’t hear any complaints from you last night.”

“So, you used me to get in my pants.”

“No, I played dirty to get what I want,” he whispered against my mouth. “I think I made it crystal clear last night how bad I have it for you.”

“While I don’t agree with your methods, they were pretty successful.”

“Does that mean I’m forgiven?” He trailed his hands along my sides. “I can feed you to make it up to you.”

I looked up into his intense eyes and realized I wasn’t going to win this round as easily as I thought I would. One touch and my willpower seemed to disappear.

“I’d rather you make it up to me in other ways.”

He hissed in a breath and stepped away from me. “I can certainly make that happen, but first we need to eat.” Logan walked me over to the small kitchen table and pulled my chair out.

“Now who’s the tease?” I settled into my seat with a pout.

He leaned in and kissed my forehead. “Trust me, you will need to fuel up for what I have planned for you later.”

“Is this your idea of foreplay?” I asked, my spirit perking up at the thought.

He aimed a devilish glint my way. “I think you became quite acquainted with my methods of foreplay last night and the fact that you’re confused has me questioning my abilities.”

I laughed, although there was nothing funny about the way he ravaged me last night. He took his time as if he cared about how I was feeling, and not just physically. He treated me like I mattered to him. Although Logan always had a way of making me feel special. I knew this wasn’t love, but it didn’t feel temporary either. I wanted to believe we were going somewhere; it was just too early yet in our journey to determine where we were headed.

Logan walked over and set down a white plate covered with scrambled eggs, diced peppers, cheese and crumbled sausage. My mouth watered. He went back to the counter and carried over two mugs of freshly poured coffee with a platter of wheat toast.

He took the seat next to me while I poked my fork into my eggs and brought it to my mouth. “This is really good. What else can you cook?”

He snagged a piece of toast off the platter and applied a little butter. “I was only half-joking earlier. My cooking skills are limited. I can cook a few things but not much. Eggs just happen to be one of them.”

“Do you cook for all the women you bring home?”

His food paused on the way to his mouth, and I wanted to kick myself.

“Why would you ask me that?” He set his toast down and narrowed his eyes on me.

“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have. I don’t know what possessed me to ask that. It’s none of my business.”

His expression became serious. “I think you do know why you asked me that. Just be honest with me and tell me why?”

I pulled my hair to the side, weaving the strands into a braid. It was something I did when I was nervous. This was a conversation I’d been trying to avoid, so I’m not sure why I had to go and open my big mouth. “I don’t understand why you like me so much. You can have any woman you want. In fact, I’m sure you’ve had your fair share of women, so why me?”

“There is so much to unpack from that I don’t even know where to begin, but first, let’s get something straight. Any woman who has sat here before you does not matter. Okay?” He looked me dead in the eyes. “I say that with all sincerity. Now let’s get down to what this is really about. Why you?” He rubbed his hands along his legs and looked up to the ceiling. “Do you remember the first night we met?”

I nodded, visibly recalling that night. Marco and Amelia were going through a rough patch, and I ran into Marco and Logan when I was out with Kara and her sister.
