Still, I thought about everything Jet had been through during Senna’s pregnancy, the way he’d changed, and what it meant to him to be a father. I’d only just become Alpha, and now I’d be adding on the responsibility of caring for a child. Did I want that?
“Kaiden?”
I leaned back, looking down at Kit as I still held her close to me. The deep wells of her sapphire eyes were the most beautiful things I’d ever seen. She felt so right here with me, my entire being calling out to have her, to keep her.
Mate.
A soft laugh left me, and I internally sent my wolf back a message saying, Yeah, buddy. I know.
Kit stared up, her face gradually becoming more and more concerned. I kissed the creases on her forehead, smoothing them away with my lips. When I met her eyes again, I smiled—wide and genuine and ear to fucking ear.
“I hope they have your eyes.”
Chapter 26 - Kit
After a few more days in that damned hospital suite, I’d been allowed to return to my room. At least I’d been given the option of either going to the room I’d been borrowing or going to Kaiden’s.
Obviously, I chose Kaiden’s room.
I was feeling much better after having my chest torn open, and I had to hand it to Sunny and Willow; they’d done such an excellent job with those sutures and unique tonics and salves of theirs that the wound was healing pretty quickly. I even held out hope that the scar wouldn’t be too bad.
And, hell, even if it was, I liked to think of the thing as my little badge of honor. I’d fought for Kaiden, stood up to the man who’d abused me for years, and I’d survived.
The day after I’d woken up, Sunny had come in to run an array of tests to ensure that everything was okay with my pregnancy. She collected my blood again, took my blood pressure, did an ultrasound on a machine that I still couldn't believe they had, and did a little look-see of my cervix to ensure it was doing what it was supposed to do.
And frankly, it had been terrible.
I was not a fan of getting poked and prodded, and I made her promise to only do the bare minimum throughout the rest of my pregnancy. As long as everything was looking good, no more endless tests, no more transvaginal ultrasounds, and no more listing off all the things she was looking for.
It freaked me out.
I’d still been told to take it easy, so I decided to enjoy my time in bed this morning. It absolutely tickled me that it had been an hour since I’d woken up, and I still hadn’t gotten dressed or left the mattress.
Ah, the slug life suits me.
The door opened, pulling me out of my thoughts as Kaiden returned from his meeting with the other alphas. They were still sticking around for a while to be sure there were no loose ends to tie up, and it had actually been quite nice to tell Grayson and Jet about the baby.
They’d been shocked, and Gray tried to pull that overprotective brother shit, but I shut him down quickly. After a few minutes, he’d melted into happy uncle mode, and even Jet was offering all the support and baby supplies help that we needed.
He was so different from how I remembered, but I knew that vision was skewed. It was obvious that he was an amazing dad, and I knew that he’d practically raised Kaiden, so it meant a lot to my wolfman that Jet was there to support him.
“Hey. How’d it go?”
Kaiden smiled back at me, walking across the room and kicking off his shoes. “Good, but fuck, I wish they wouldn’t insist on meeting so early. Ugh.”
He collapsed down onto the bed next to me, bouncing me slightly, and then looked over as he lay on his stomach next to me. Kaiden smiled, reaching out and putting his hand on my lower belly.
“How are you doing?”
“Still fine.” I smiled, leaning over to kiss him. “I’m not far along, but maybe I’ll be one of those lucky ones that doesn’t get morning sickness.”
“Fingers crossed,” Kaiden replied, the corner of his mouth lifting in a sly grin.
We sat there in peace and quiet for a moment, and then the energy in the air changed, charging up.
“Do you think that maybe you’d like to…?”
Kaiden smirked as he let the question finish in my head, waggling his brows at me. I couldn't help but laugh, and then Kaiden was pulling himself closer to me, nuzzling into my neck as he kissed and nibbled playfully.
