“Listen carefully,” her mom said to her with a hand on her shoulder.

Esme could now hear the voices of the midwives, who encouraged her to push while Asher was tapping her face and trying to revive her. He knew that she was drifting unconscious. She watched him call the attention of the midwives when she wasn't responding.

“You have to goback, Esme,” her mom said to her, “Your husband needs you, and you need to deliver that baby. You cannot afford to die on them as I did you.” She placed a palm on her face.

Esme sniffled, struggling to hold back the tears in her eyes.

“I'm afraid, mom. I don't think that I can push…”

“Yes, you can,” she cut Esme off. “You can and you will. Do it for the sake of your husband and your unborn child.”

Esme sighed and wiped her tears.

“You have to return now before you can no longer do so.” She hugged Esme tightly.

“How do I return?”

“Walk through that door.” She pointed at it, and Esme pointed in its direction.

It had just popped up out of nowhere because she was certain that the door wasn't there before.

“You're running out of time, go!” She pushed her away and toward the door.

Esme ran over to it and stopped by the entrance after opening it up. She took one last look at her mother and said, “I love you, mom.”

“I love you too, pumpkin.” She smiled.

Esme reciprocated the gesture and walked through the door into a blinding light.

With a loud gasp, she jerkedback to life with so much energy, almost scaring the midwives.

“You're okay!”Asher said excitedly, “Oh, you're okay.” He kissed her forehead.

“I'm okay,” she replied. “Now, let's deliver this baby.”

Esme wasn't going to subject her child to a life without a mother's love and affection. She didn't get to experience it,but her child would. If she decided to go through this again, her future children would all experience a mother's love and affection.

You can do this, Esme. You can do this, she encouraged herself, and suddenly, strength from nowhere overtook her for the next few minutes.

As she pushed with her newfound strength, Esme let out a loud cry, which resonated throughout the entirebuilding.

“It's coming… It's coming!”a midwife exclaimed. “I can see thehead. Push, my lady… Push!”

Esme held her husband's hand so tightly and pushed so vehemently while her body trembled at the severe pain that bolted through her veins.

She felt her entrance widening beyond its limit as something very huge was being expelled through it. Esme was screaming at her tearing mound, and then, it popped.

“Almost there!”the midwives chorused.

The baby's head slipped out first, and Esme felt a wind of relief blow across her face for a fraction of a second.

Soon, it was completely out, and a heavy sigh of assuagement came forth from Esme's lips as her head fell back to the pillow beneath her.

“It's a boy!” One of the midwives rejoiced, holding the baby in her arms as he cried, his screeching piercing through the air.

“You did it, my love.” Asher smiled at her as she chuckled faintly. “You actually did it.” He kissed her.

Esme had tears rolling down to the corner of her eyes as she lay down, feeling the dampness of the soaked sheets beneath her.
