“Hey,” Juniper said to her. “You got this.” She flashed an encouraging smile at her before going to get the door.

After Juniper had ushered him inside and left them so they could talk, Esme's heart began racing as she hoped that they wouldn't only communicate but also comprehend each other.

He took the news of the baby joyously, as expected, but when she told him about how she felt, he was silent. Esme thought that she should have waited a bit, maybe until after he'd taken a shower or something.

He had literally just returned from the city where he was closing a business deal. She felt bad for not even asking him how it went with the investors before hitting him with her desires.

His silence wasn't making things easy either, and the suspense was killing her.

It's official. I'm selfish.

“Say something. Please,” she said to him, hoping that she hadn't upset him. She just really needed to get it out of her system.

“I'm sorry…” He massaged his eyeballs. “I'm sorry that you feel this way, Esme.” He held her hands.

Okay. I didn't see this coming.

“Am I asking for too much?” she asked, her voice calm.

“No.” He smiled. “I got so carried away with everything that I neglected something as important as this. I'm so sorry, Esme.”

Her heart suddenly melted like ice.

“And you're right. We need to be more romantic—I need to be more romantic.” He kissed her lips. “I'll try. I promise.”

Esme did not expect this to be the outcome of their conversation, but she was glad that they didn't just communicate; they also understood each other.

“So, I'm about to be a father, huh?” He beamed with pride and joy.

“Yes.” She chuckled and squealed as he yanked her up, bridal-style.

Chapter 17 - Asher

He had expected her to be with the child at any moment since their first night, but he didn't think he would be this excited to be a father. His life was gradually falling into place, making him appreciate the recent happenings around him.

It was funny that only a few months ago, he was completely bewildered about what to do about his Pack's Impending doom. Today, everything was different and good, and it would eventually be better when the baby arrived.

Then there was Esme's request.

He had pondered deeply about what she said she wanted. At first, it had shocked him, but he was quick to realize that she was right and that it wasn't entirely fair of him to deny her of that.

If anyone deserved to be treated with all the romance, love, care, and attention in the world, it was her. She'd been through hell, she'd suffered rejection all her life, and hatred and segregation had been her companions for as long as she could remember.

He made up his mind to be a better husband to her, to love her right, and to make her know the meaning of the word love.

Asher thought ofa way to spice things up between them in a different way. He acted strangely toward Esme all day, making her question what was going on in his head.

He was in his office that evening when she knocked, and he asked her to come inside.

“Hi,” she said softly as she walked toward his table.

“Hey,” he replied without taking his eyes off the screen of her laptop.

“You asked to see me?” She stood in front of his table, her expression a mix of anger and sadness.

He knew that she hated the fact that he had called for her after ignoring her all day. She must have been expecting him to come around and see her at least, but instead, he thought it was wise to make her climb up to his office.

“Yes. I did,” he said, rattling his fingers across the keyboard.
