Juniper touched her forehead to feel her temperature.
“Looks like you have a fever,” she said to Esme, but she wouldn't listen.
“I'm fine. Let's go on.” She stepped forward to take a stance.
“No, you need to rest.” Juniper turned to her. “Your body needs rest, Esme. You might have all these powers, but you're still flesh and blood.”
Esme was about to object when she suddenly felt hit by a wave of nausea, which prompted her to run over to a nearby bush and puke.
She vomited for a while before wiping her sleeve over her mouth.
“I need to take a look at you.” Juniper walked over to where she was standing and examined her pale green eyes. “Your pupils are dilated, and your eyes are pale. Hmm.”
“What does that mean?” Esme inquired curiously.
“Come on.” She walked away. “Let's go find out.”
Esme followed her, and they returned to her room, where her two maidens were cleaning.
“Thank you very much, ladies, but I'll take it from here,” Juniper said to them.
They looked at Esme to see if she was okay with that, and she said to them, “Please, leave us.”
They smiled at her and dematerialized, shutting the door behind them.
“They treat you like a queen,” Juniper said to her as she walked over to the table.
“Honestly… Sometimes, I feel like one.” She blushed. “They've been good to me since the first day I arrived.”
“Are you talking about the two ladies or the totality of Asher's Pack?” Juniper ground a leaf in a small mortar and said an enchantment.
“All of the above.” Esme laughed.
Juniper poured some water into the mortar and emptied the contents into a glass cup.
“Here.” She handed it to Esme. “Drink up.”
“Uh, what's this?” She accepted the glass.
“It's a special herb witches use to detect life within another life.”
“I don't understand.”
“Just drink it.”
Esme sighed, and a grimace appeared on her round face when she smelled it. “Gosh, it smells like shit.”
“It tastes even worse,” Juniper replied, and Esme paused, contemplating her next move. “Come on, bottoms up.”
She shut her eyes and chugged it down her throat—she trusted Juniper. Esme shook her head as the contents traveled down her throat. It was bitter and sour at the same time, but it was also strangely sweet in her stomach.
“How do you feel?” Juniper asked her.
She burped subtly and said. “Fine. I feel fine.”
“When you drank it, how did it taste?”
“Bitter… Sour…?”
