“That's the big fuss?” He couldn't believe that she made his heart skip over something like that.
“Big fuss?” Her brows knitted together, and he knew that he'd struck a nerve. “Is it not important to you how I feel?” she asked gently, hurt by his reaction.
“No, it's not that.” He grew closer and sighed. “Of course how you feel is important to me.” He held her hands, and she continued.
“The sex is good. It's great, actually. But I want more. Asher, the first time we had sex, the first time we made love, you left me the morning after and we never really talked about the experience.” Her eyes were teary.
He tried to defend himself but couldn't find the right words to say.
“It might not mean anything to you…but it sure as hell means a lot to me. I've been feeling used since that night.”
“Used? No. Please, don't say that.” He was starting to understand her. “I know…but that's how I feel.”
He sighed softly, “This seems out of the blue, without any heads-up. Why didn't you just tell me sooner?”
She drew in a deep breath and wiped her hair backwards.
“I didn't know how,” she replied. “You're a good man, Asher, but that act of negligence really hurt me.”
He put his head down and massaged his eyeballs, unable to understand why she waited so long to have this conversation with him.
“I’m sorry. I didn't mean to,” he said to her.
“I know that you didn't.” She put her head down and raised it back up. “Look, all I'm saying is that you add a little more romance to love life. Is that too much to ask?”
“Esme, I'm doing everything I can to love you right,” he said defensively because he didn't know what else she wanted from him.
“Yes. Yes, you are. But you're doing it in the same place and you know my story you know that I've never seen the world. Yes, you love me, Asher Grey, but I feel caged, much like Jerry.” She stole a glance at the squirrel's cage. “No offense, buddy.”
Now, Asher understood her perfectly well and she was right. He was slacking in that aspect.
“So, when you said you wanted more romance, you meant we start going out?”
“Wouldn't that be great?”
He stared at her in silence as he thought of ways to fix this even though he knew it wasn't going to difficult to fix. His wife had told him her problem and he was willing to solve that problem and become a better husband, a better father to be.
Chapter 16 - Esme
Esme had been working hard to improve her powers, pushing herself beyond her limits to become better, and she was indeed becoming better. What she had achieved in this short period of time was marvelous even to her.
She could feel that she was getting stronger by the day, even though her body had been acting strange lately. She'd been having constant migraines and feeling dizzy almost all the time, and she had thought that it was a result of the way she was using her powers.
Esme was impressed with herself and how far she'd come. Juniper had been a wonderful teacher and mentor, helping her better understand her abilities and how to harness them.
She spent so much time helping Asher's Pack, and she loved the job. It made her happy. All her life, she had never been given the opportunity to be anything more than an outcast, but these people saw her as a lot more than that.
If only Erin and the other townspeople could see her now. All those who thought that she was good at nothing and had no future would be shocked at the woman she'd become today.
She had delved into the deeper parts of her magic and had defied the laws of nature. All that had been draining her; maybe that was the reason for these aches and her weakness.
Juniper had said that it was possible that all the mana might have been affecting her, but she felt it might be something else.
They were out in the woods training when Esme felt so lightheaded and reflexively dropped to her knees. Juniper rushed to her and helped her up.
“Are you alright?” She asked.
“Yeah…I guess so.” Esme rose to her feet.
