Esme believed that she had the power to delve into the memories of plants because they were living things as well. She believed that plants could see and feel the events happening around them but from a different perspective than that of humans. As a Nature Witch, she believed that she had the ability to tap into the memories of any plant and see or feel what was stored there.

She explained the phenomenon was like taking a flash-drive and inserting it into a computer to gain access to the data stored inside it. Of course, Elder William and Asher were blown away, but even Juniper didn't think it was possible.

“It's easier to tap into Apiana's memories because, according to your culture, she was human. Not human-human, but human—you know what I mean,” she said to Asher as they all stood underneath the tree.

“We get you,” Juniper replied with a smile.

Asher and Elder William exchanged glances, then turned to Juniper who simply shrugged her shoulders. They didn't really understand what she was saying, but they were open-minded enough to watch her work.

Esme gently placed a palm on the thick bark of the tree and shut her eyes.

“Do you think she can do it?” Elder William asked the Alpha.

“Honestly, I don't really know,” he replied

“Maybe she can. I think she can,” Juniper chipped in.

“Do you mind? I'm trying to focus here,” Esme opened one of her eyes and said to them.

“Oh, sorry.” Asher gestured, zipping up his lips.

“Thank you.” She shut her eyes back and continued to whisper a spell.

Suddenly, a gust of wind gently blew around them. The charms, wards, and relics hanging off the tree began to jingle, swaying to the rhythm of the breeze as the leaves started to rustle.

Esme gave out a loud gasp, and her head shot up toward the canopy of the tree. Her green eyes had begun to glow marvelously. Her hair was flying backward, blown by the wind.

Juniper reached out to touch her;

“Esme, are you…?”

She immediately gasped loudly, and her head shot up to face the sky. Her eyes glowed purple.

“Err… Is this a witch thing or what?” Elder William asked Asher.

“I don't know,” he replied. “But there's only one way to find out.” He looked at the two women.

“I don't think that's a good idea,” Elder William said with a hushed tone, not comfortablewith the plan.

“Come on, aren't you at least a little bit curious to know what's going on in their heads?”

“No, not really….”

Asher laughed and reached out to touch his wife.

“What's the worst thing that can happen?” He shrugged his shoulders and immediately dared to touch Esme's arm.

“No, wait…” Elder William was saying before Asher took that bold step.

His eyes widened instantly, and he saw himself standing beside Esme and Juniper in the woods of a place that looked exactly like the Ghostbound lands. The people’s way of life was the same as theirs, but their clothingseemed to be more ancient. He realized now that he was in Apiana's memory.

He turned to his side and saw that Elder William had joined them, too.

“Whoa,” the elder said softly as he looked around the environment.

It was late at night, and the full moon was at its peak in the sky. A bonfire lit up the night while a couple of individuals dressed in their animal skins danced around it.

They seemed happy, unaffected by any curse, and the land was flourishing, judging by the thickness of the forest and the variety of plants around.
