“I'm sorry, I wasted your time.”
“You didn't, actually.”
They looked at each other in silence before he said, “alright, then. Let's eat.”
“I've never had this many meals at once in my life before,” she confessed, sticking her fork into the plate of bacon before her.
“Well, all that's about to change,” he said to her with a smile, and they dug into their meals.
About an hour later, they stepped out, as suggested by Asher. He was proud of her, so much so that he wanted to show her off at any given opportunity. Holding hands, they walked through the town together, chattering and laughing. They were greeted by passersby and followed by some who wanted to have a closer look at the human girl.
“You're a celebrity,” he said to her as they strolled around town with people greeting and waving at them.
She laughed lightly. “Honestly, I do feel like one.”
“Why do I sense a ‘but’ coming?” He looked at her.
“Well…” She sighed. “I'm just not used to this much attention… Or love.”
He tightened his hold on her hand and said,“Well, you better start getting used to it because it's your reality now.” He smiled.
She exhaled sharply. Obviously, Esme still needed to work on her confidence, but knowing her, she'd pick it up fast.
“I showed you the witches’ graves the other day. Today, I'm showing you our garden… Our farm,” he said to her. “Come with me.”
He led the way, and soon they arrived. He parted the barred gates, and they walked inside.
Apiana's tree was blossoming but not with the same speed as the other plants and crops on the farm. They were growing, but very slowly.
“So, this is where your Pack cultivates their harvest?” she asked, looking around at the weakly blooming crops.
“Yes,” he replied.
“They're dying,” she said.
“No. They're coming back to life,” he explained. “I told you before that your arrival was the reason the plants started growing at the graves. This is the reason the union between us had to be done as quickly as possible.”
“To save your land and your crops.” She looked at him, and he nodded.
“I've been using my money to import food so the Pack could feed. But it goes beyond just feeding. Our men and women hate being idle, and this farm is all we have.” He pointed at some wards and relics hanging around. “These charms… They're part of the reason this farm still stands today.”
“That tree…” Esme looked at it as it stood tall amidst the others with its beautiful white leaves. “It doesn't look dead.”
“That…” He pointed at it, “That is Apiana's tree. It's the main reason this farm is still standing. The charms are an extra force.”
Esme sighed. “I'm sorry your Pack is going through this, and I sincerely hope that this marriage of ours will indeed help.”
He was touched by her concern because it sounded genuine. “I hope so, too.”
“All right.” She exhaled. “I'm going to need you to step back.”
“Why?” he wondered.
“Because I…” she paused. “It is kind of embarrassing, but I love singing to plants.”
He laughed. “It's not embarrassing. In fact, it was your voice that drew me to you the day we met.” He flashed a smile at her. “I think you're a pretty good singer.”
She blushed. “Thank you.”
