Asher accepted the charms and turned to Esme.

“Put these on. They'll keep you safe from the curse until we figure things out.”

She bent her neck, and he gently wrapped the charms around her, even though she felt deep within her that she might not really need the protection of the charms.

“There's a lot for you to process, so I'll give you some time to think this through. But please, consider my offer.”

She exhaled slowly.

“I'll have the table set for dinner just for you.” He smiled.

Esme had never had someone say that to her before, and her heart melted. What else did she have to lose? Where else could she run to anyway? Maybe she would give it a try. Besides, if what Asher had said was true, then he and his Pack needed all the help they could get.

She had felt the pain of the witches at the grave, and she had heard their whispers more than once. Maybe he was telling the truth after all.

Then there was that dream she had earlier on. Who was the woman she saw, and what did the vision mean?

“You should eat and rest. It's going to be a long day tomorrow.” Asher made to walk into the building.

“What's happening tomorrow?” she inquired.

He turned to her. “Oh, did I forget to mention? The mating ceremony is tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow?” She instinctively raised her brows in shock, “How could you have forgotten to mention that?”

He smiled at her and instructed Elder William to help her back to her room.

Her eyes widened in surprise. She didn't expect it to be so soon, andshe thought that she would have moretime.

“You've got to be kidding me,” she muttered to herself.

Chapter 7 - Asher

Asher was seated by the window in his room; his eyes were absentmindedly scouring the horizon as the crescent moon shimmered its light over the town. He thought about Esme and how she managed to feel the pain of the dead witches.

He remembered the day he convinced her to follow him back to his Pack. His mind drifted to the moment when he drove into the town. Although he had his eyes focused on the road, he had seen her wincing at her headaches with both hands clasped over her ears. He remembered how he had to pull over to get her out.

‘Do you hear that?’ she had asked him, groaning painfully.

‘Hear what?’

‘The voices.’

Asher reminisced about that moment, trying to make sense out of it.

What voices was she talking about? And why did she not hear them until they had driven into the Ghostbound lands?

When he first met her, she was singing to some plants in her father's garden, and they appeared to respond to the melody of her voice,as if that wasn't weird enough for a regular human girl.

Only a couple of hours after her arrival, the dead plants on the lands were already coming back to life. The townspeople were glad in anticipation of a renewed hope.

He had asked Elder William if this was how quickly the curses were supposed to be lifted even without the proper marriage rights.

“What do you think is happening? Why is the earth suddenly fertile? I know a human girl is here already. But was it supposed to happen this fast?”

“I'm not so sure, Asher,” Elder William sighed as they hiked the woods.

This was after Asher had taken her back to her room, where she was served a special meal.
