“That’s all?”
“I swear it. Just enough to keep her off my back for a little while. So what do you think? Can you please help me, Isla?” Fannar watched her expectantly, his eyes pleading even more than his words. She almost felt bad for him… Almost.
She leaned back in her seat and crossed her arms on her chest. “Let me think on it a little bit and let you know what I decide.”
He let out an audible sigh of relief. “Thank you—”
“No.”
He looked up. “What?”
“You heard me, Fannar Agdluak,” Isla said, holding his gaze, her voice as cold as frost. “The answer is no. I have no intention whatsoever of helping you. Good luck with your ‘mommy problems’. I’d like to come down now. Thank you.”
Fannar stuttered incomprehensibly as she unlocked the door and hopped out of the truck. The look of bafflement on her face was more than enough to make up for everything he had ever done to her.
She smiled and waved, then slam the door shut in his face while he still stuttered in gibberish. She had never felt better about saying no to someone in her entire life.
Chapter 6 - Fannar
Fannar watched the woman trudge relentlessly through knee deep snow with utter disbelief. He didn’t understand what he had said to piss her off so much. He had no doubt that she was livid. But it couldn’t have been because of him, right?
He had no idea how he had messed his proposal up so bad. Okay, maybe I should have apologized first and explained things before she asked. Still, it didn’t seem like enough reason for the reaction she was having. As far as he was concerned, she was overreacting.
He shook himself and drove forward. Isla had not made it very far in the snow, but she was relentless. He drove beside her, rolled down the window. “Isla, you’re being ridiculous. Get back in the car.”
She ignored him, whistling a tune he’d never heard before. For all she knew, she was alone on the road. Her boot caught in the snow and she staggered, but righted herself. She tried to keep a straight face through her near fall and it achieved the opposite purpose.
Fannar burst out in laughter and earned himself a glare. She continued walking as if only moments ago she wasn’t inches from being soaked through in snow.
Fannar managed to control his laughter. “Can you please get back in? We are at least half a mile from the next station. Please get back in the car.”
“No. I’m fine walking, thank you for your hospitality.”
“Are you always so stubborn?”
She grinned at him. “You have no idea.”
He watched the woman as she labored through the snow. She was so different from everyone in the pack. She was shorter, and brighter. She never did fit, a triangle peg over a square hole.
He could remember her clearly now, albeit vaguely. Her colorful and bubbly personally used to bug him out so much when he was younger, but he could never tell exactly why it bothered him so much.
He was surprised to find that he still felt the same way now. She spoke to him in a way that no one else did. She had no fear for him, and the fact that he was her alpha was all but lost on her, for all the deference she gave him. Simply put, she was the same, annoying girl from high school.
And yet, he could not deny the longing he felt for her. The sensation had been gnawing at him all day, and had only been soothed when he kissed her. The longing disappeared with that beautiful kiss, and now all he wanted to do was kiss her again.
She was beautiful. There was no denying that. She’d been awkward as a child, but as a woman, she was one of the most beautiful he’d ever seen. Her silver hair and gray eyes were the only things that identified her as a frost peak wolf. Everything else about her seemed so different, so alien.
She intrigued him. He wanted to figure her out like a difficult puzzle. He was sure that underneath her cold exterior, there were layers and layers tucked beneath, and he wanted to unravel all of that.
He had a great opportunity to do that while getting his mother off his back. He’d seen the look on her face and knew she wasn’t convinced, but willing to let it play out. It was now up to him to make it work. Unfortunately, he was making a mess of it so far.
She’d turned him down so suddenly, it caught him off balance. She was light and airy about it too, as if it was the easiest thing in the world to do. She didn’t give a fuck if she left him with his cock in his hands and his briefs hugging his ankles. She couldn’t be bothered. That was what made him so worried.
“Why won’t you help me?” he asked. “I explained everything to you. I let you know what’s going on. Why won’t you help me? I’m going to compensate you for your help, you know?”
Without turning, she said, “What could I possibly want from you? Leave me alone already. I gave you my answer. It’s not changing.”
“Why won’t you help me?” he asked again.
