He swallowed hard. “I said I know everything. About your mom, about the were-bears. I know all about it.” He raised his hands to calm her down when her face grew hard. She looked shocked and angry, and he could understand why.
“Josie, listen. I know everything you’re about to say. I dug around after I found those men in your home. I did so because I was worried for you. It doesn’t change anything for me, though. I always wanted you to be my mate, and now, the mother of my child.
“When we broke up, it left a big hole in my heart, one that I struggled unsuccessfully to fill. I was angry for a long time. I hated how things turned out between us, but knowing the background, I now completely understand.
“I want you to know that I don’t want this thing between us to end. I promise to be there for the good and for the bad, and I don’t plan to allow anything happen to you or our child. I don’t care what it is, nothing is ever coming between us. I will not allow it, as long as I breathe.”
He knew he sounded a bit dramatic, but he didn’t care. He was being honest, and that was all that mattered to him. Josie had said he never pushed. Well, this was him pushing. He only hoped that he didn’t end up pushing her away.
Josie froze. She’d been deathly still while he spoke, an unreadable expression on her face. And then, like ice, he saw it crack, like a porcelain mask. His heart skipped. He’d gotten through to her. He’d finally gotten through to her, and the feeling was euphoric.
She withdrew her feet from his legs and Callahan felt a moment of panic then, thinking she was about to run away again. But she set her cup down and scooted toward him. Wordlessly, she threw her arms around him and hugged him.
It was such an alien gesture that it left him breathless. He put his arms around her and pulled her close. She looked up at him, and her eyes shone with tears. And then she kissed him.
The kiss was soft and patient, and it said a million words. Her mouth was sweet with cinnamon and spices, and her lips soft as chocolate eclairs. Callahan lost himself in that kiss, and all his anger and frustration from the last week melted away.
“Thank you,” she whispered, cradling his cheek in her palm. “I really don’t know what to say.”
“You don’t need to say anything.” He kissed her again, this time more fiercely than the first time. He loved her. He’d always loved her, and he was certain that was never going to change.
She reached down and grabbed his hardness. He moaned as her touch filled him with pleasure. Her fingers worried the knot on his sweatpants and he bristled with anticipation. She took off his pants and then pulled off her dress, her pink nipples hard and beautiful.
Callahan lifted his t-shirt over his head and added it to the pile on the floor. Josie kissed his neck slowly, and then his chest and his navel. He spread his legs instinctively and she looked up at him, a wry smile on her face.
She slid off the couch to the floor and wrapped her delicate fingers around his shaft. Her mouth was cool as she took Callahan inside it. He sighed and shut his eyes, enjoying every moment of the scene playing out before him.
Josie was slow and intentional, moving along the length of his hardness with incredible skill. Callahan emptied his mind, focusing on nothing. He grabbed her hair and guided her slowly, making sweet sounds of euphoria.
He could feel the orgasm building and he eased into it. But Josie stopped. He looked down at her, breathing hard through his mouth. “Not so fast,” Josie teased. She got back on top of him and kissed him on the forehead.
Slowly, she guided him into her wetness, shuddering as his shaft was buried up to the hilt. She moved like a gently flowing river, her hips rolling in sync with the soft music pouring out of the speakers.
Their bodies spoke to each other, and Callahan lost himself in the moment. Time stopped and the world faded around him. Josie’s motions drove him wild, and the tempo made him long for more. This wasn’t just intercourse, this was something far more subtle, a promise of sorts.
Simply put, it was beautiful. He pulled her closer and pulled a nipple into his mouth. She moaned pleasantly, the sound sweeter than music. Callahan had no idea how long it lasted, but it didn’t matter. It was perfection, the most perfect thing he had ever experienced.
They climaxed together, their bodies growing rigid and their grips growing tighter as they orgasmed in beautiful synchrony. They lay together for a long time afterward, saying nothing. What was left to be said?
“We should go upstairs,” Callahan said quietly. He was still pulsating softly inside Josie, and she shuddered every other second.
“Can we stay here a little longer?” she asked. “I don’t want to change a thing.”
Callahan had a feeling she wasn’t talking about their perch on the couch. Josie had spent her whole life running. At first, he’d thought that to be the worst thing about her. Now, he understood that she did it to protect herself from the world.
“Sure we can,” Callahan said, running a hand gently through her hair. “We can stay here as long as you want.” She nodded and rested her head on his chest. Nothing had ever felt so good.
Chapter 17 - Josie
Everything Callahan had done throughout the whole evening had worked to set the mood right. From the music, to the tea, to the food, and then the foot rubs. Looked at in isolation, there was little special about each of those things. But when Josie put it all together, she knew he’d created magic.
He’d conveniently steered her away from what she’d come down to talk to him about at every step, and it kept getting better, until they ended up on the couch, naked and sweaty, muttering sweet nothings to each other.
She wouldn’t have imagined, in a million worlds, the day ending in sex. But it had, and it was beautiful. His words still rang softly in her head as she rose and fell gently with the rhythm of his breathing.
He’d gone limp inside her, but she loved having him there. Somewhere inside her, a part of her was screaming warnings, shouting to be heard at the top of her lungs. She asked Josie what the fuck she was doing and asked her if she’d lost her mind. Josie locked up that part of herself, piling things on top of her until her protests were reduced to a tiny, muffled sound.
Callahan’s hand roamed up and down her back distractedly. She wondered what was going through his mind. Was he as happy as she was? Was he as scared? He was always so sturdy and confident, and she had no idea how he did it.
