“Don’t be sorry. Start your own management firm and hire me as your right-hand woman.”
I narrow my eyes on her. “Have you been talking to Jett?”
“No. Why?”
“He said the same thing about me quitting.”
“Why don’t you?”
“It’s not that easy. I’d have to go out on the road and find a band to manage. A band no one else has heard of. A band willing to take a chance on a brand-new manager.”
She rolls her eyes. “Don’t be silly. Cash & the Sinners would be your first client. Bands would be lining up at your door to be associated with you.”
“The band isn’t firing Mike.”
“It’s cute you think you could stop them.”
I grin. “It’s not cute. I have dirt on every single one of them. They know not to piss me off.”
“You have dirt on Fender? Please, please, tell me. I’ll be your slave forever.”
“I’m sure you could get Fender to reveal all his secrets to you.”
She sighs. “Probably.”
My phone beeps with a message. “I should get back to work.”
Leia stands and gathers the dishes. “I’ll get out of your hair.”
“And go brag to the gossip gals that you know all of my secrets?”
“Nah. I avoid those ladies. But I did get your mind off whatever had you looking like someone killed your dog when I walked in the house.”
“You’re not mischievous. You’re devious.”
She winks. “You’re welcome.”
Chapter 29
Lightbulb moment – the moment you realize how badly you screwed up
Jett
As soon as I’m outside the house, I want to go back inside. I want to explain to Aurora why I didn’t respond to her declaration of love.
But I can’t go back.
I don’t know how to explain. I don’t know how to tell her I don’t feel the same way without hurting her. Hurting Aurora is the last thing I want to do.
I walk around town until I find myself in front of Gibson and Mercy’s house. I debate walking past it but I could use a friend.
“What are you doing here?” Gibson asks when he opens the door.
“Do I need a reason to visit my best friend?”
“Your best friend? You haven’t been treating me like a best friend for a while now.”
I scowl. “You weren’t supposed to fall in love.”
