I didn’t see you coming, either.
If I had known Grace would become special to me, I would have begged another Knight to take my place. I had no idea she would make me second-guess my oaths. That just being around her each day would become unbearable. I wanted her so badly and hated myself for having these feelings.
I wanted more of her time.
More stolen moments.
More of her.
Grace sat up, clutching my bicep. Sparks of electricity crackled between us, a palpable energy I felt each time. She leaned in closer, lips puckered like she wanted a kiss. Her hand cupped my face as she breathed harder.
My chest rose and fell rapidly when she parted those pink lips now inches from mine. “Grace,” I said with a warning in my tone. “Please. We can’t keep doing this.”
“You took my virginity. Why stop now?”
After risking my life on the island, I deserved another taste—one kiss to satisfy the craving. Once was not enough. But crossing the line again with Grace would make it harder for us to say goodbye.
Grace didn’t heed my warning and pressed her lips to mine, waiting for me to open up. Instead, I gripped her skinny biceps and backed away.
“This can’t happen again,” I said firmly. “Your dad will be here soon to take you to his next duty station. If we keep this up, it will only end in heartbreak for both of us.”
Grace rose from the chair, her top lip quivering. “You don’t like me. You only wanted to fuck me so Rhys didn’t get the chance.”
“That’s not true.” I reached out for her, and she recoiled. “I like you more than I should.”
“What’s the problem?” Grace slid her hands onto her hips. A single tear streaked her left cheek. “My grandfather would never know.”
“Please understand that I’m not trying to hurt you.” I stepped toward her. “We can’t always get what we want.”
She sucked back the tears and bolted down the aisle, leaving me no choice but to go after her. After putting myself in danger with The Knights, I wanted to relax and have a quiet night. But there were hardly ever dull moments in my life.
“There you are.” Rhys entered the theater, holding open the door with his hip. “I’ve been looking everywhere for you, princess.”
“Now is not a good time,” I snapped.
Rhys brushed the tears from her cheek and gave me an evil snarl. “What did you do to her, Marshall?”
I waved my hand. “You can go. I’m not done talking to Grace. This doesn’t concern you.”
“No,” Grace whispered, her back to me. “I have nothing left to say.”
Rhys wrapped his arm around her, smirking at me as they left the theater.
He won.
Once again, I pushed her into the arms of my enemy.
Chapter Twenty-Six
GRACE
I was so mad at Cole that I saw stars in my vision. He took my virginity, and then all of a sudden, it was too much for him. I hated my grandfather and his stupid rules. If not for him, Cole would have been with me.
Of course, Rhys made up for Cole’s shortcomings. He pinned my back to the wall and kissed me like he wanted to drain the air from my lungs, making me forget about the fight with Cole.
Rhys dipped his head down, and I couldn’t take my eyes off his lips. They were soft and warm, and I wanted to kiss him. “We only have a few more days. I want to make this a summer you won’t forget.”
“Hmmm…” I hooked my arms around his neck, and he placed his hands on my hips, tapping his long fingers. “So far, you’re exceeding my expectations.”
