I stand up a little straighter, gaining more confidence and walking toward him. I know Rhett has my back. I grin widely, showing them my white teeth. Cooper watches me carefully, but she . . . watches me with hunger in her eyes. The feeling is mutual, gorgeous. I wink at her, and she gasps and bites her lip, watching me carefully as I approach.
“I’m not here for you, I’m here for her.” Again, I’m drawn to and want to be close to her.
“What does the Arcana Society want with her?” he demands, and she gets closer to the agent, which infuriates me. I can protect her better than that pretty fucker can. He notices the shift and smirks.
“The Arcana Society doesn’t want her.” Rhett’s tone is harsh with a hint of jealousy. I guess he noticed how she moved closer to Agent Cooper, too.
“Then why are you here?” he spits as his index finger twitches on the gun, and I know he’s losing his patience. We better be clear, or this time he’ll shoot first and ask questions later.
“We’re hunting—” I pause for a moment choosing my words, “someone, and when we caught Zelyah’s scent, we followed it here.”
I don’t dare mention any more than that. He doesn’t need to know that we used our resources to track her down.
“Don’t the Arcana Society frown upon you when you deviate from your orders?” He puts the gun back in the holster on his hip and crosses his arms.
“They will never know,” I say immediately. “And they will never find out.”
He can’t miss the threat in my voice, but he smirks like it didn’t bother him at all.
“Are you taking me to them?” her voice quivers. This is the first time I’ve heard her speak, and her voice is like honey to my ears. I want to hear the sound of her voice for the rest of my life. I hate that this is the first impression she’s getting from us.
“Oh goddess no. This is outside of Arcana business.” Her shoulders relax, and I feel like an asshole for not explaining everything clearly.
Rhett eyes her, taking in every curve and contour of her body. He steps forward with intent, but Agent Cooper growls, a low, threatening sound that rattles the room. Suddenly there’s a loud laugh that startles Rhett and me. With blinding speed, he retrieves his weapon from the holster on his hip.
“There’s no way in hell I’m letting you take Zel!” She stares at Rhett and me, her eyes wide with fear. “You’re not taking her anywhere. She’s staying here.” The agent’s voice booms.
A savage possessiveness takes hold as I stare down the man in front of me. She will be ours, no matter the cost. I don’t care if I have to kill the agent and it brings the FBI and the fae down on us. I’ll make all their nightmares come to life. We’re not leaving this place without her. Zelyah’s scream shatters the silence. My blood turns to ice in my veins as I whip around to face her, but before I can move a muscle, a deafening gunshot echoes through the agent’s office.
Chapter 19
Zelyah
Idon’t know why I did it. I shouldn’t have done it, but something compelled me to do it. Agent Cooper looks at me with rage for what I’ve done.
“Zelyah . . .” he says angrily.
I couldn’t let him shoot Rhett and Killian, I just couldn’t. I don’t know what it is about these guys that make me drawn to them. Intricate tattoos adorn Killian’s golden-brown skin, a stark contrast to the shimmer of white hair catching in the light. A barbell glints just under his right brow, and everything about him stands out like a beacon of raw strength. On the other hand, Rhett exudes a dark, brooding intensity, his bronze eyes burning with an inner fire that terrifies and fascinates me.
Agent Cooper had pulled his gun out in one swift movement, and when his trigger finger moved, I just knew he was going to pull it. At the last second, I pushed his hands upward, making sure he didn’t wound Killian. I just couldn’t let the agent shoot him, even knowing they work for the Arcana Society and have an oath bound by magic to be loyal to them. Maybe I am stupid. My abuelita would be so mad at me for not letting Agent Cooper bring him down. Hell, she’d be mad that I even got caught in the first place.
Los vieras dejado que se maten ellos mismos. Te estas me tiendo en algo que no vas a poder salir. Her words hover in my mind, telling me I should have let them kill each other because I’m digging myself deep into something I won’t be able to get out of.
“Zelyah . . .” Agent Cooper’s voice booms again. “They serve the Arcana Society. They have no choice but to follow orders. They have no free will. If the Arcana Society wants you dead, Rhett and Killian will do it, even if they don’t want to.”
I understand the consequences of his words. I can’t be on the Arcana Society’s radar, yet here are two men standing before me who work for them. Agent Cooper could get away with killing them. He’s a prince and an FBI agent, after all, he’s got all the right connections. I guess I just like to live dangerously. In a flash, Rhett gets up and punches Agent Cooper in the face. I barely see when his fist makes contact.
Killian goes back and sits on top of the desk, folding his hands on his thighs. They throw punches at each other. Cooper may be leaner, but he’s skilled. I’m actually surprised he can handle his own. He didn’t do shit in Faerie. Where was that energy when I was fighting those hooded figures? That reminds me, I need to ask him who they were.
“Should we stop the fight?” I ask Killian, who looks to be at ease with the tension in the room.
Of the two of them, he seems like the flirty one, and he knows it by the way he carries himself. Rhett doesn’t look like he dates as much as Killian does. A bubble of jealousy runs through me at the thought of them dating someone other than me. I barely know the guys. I’m not sure why I felt so possessive for a second.
“Nah. They’ll eventually tire out.”
I don’t know how long this will take, so I take a seat in Agent Cooper’s chair. My butt relaxes, and I lean back watching the two gorgeous men fight. Killian tilts his body so that he can see the brawl while keeping an eye on me.
There is no hair pulling, but they’re kicking each other’s nuts when the opportunity presents itself. Killian cringes, but still, he won’t do anything. Agent Cooper’s library is getting smashed, and I want to pick up the books that spilled to the floor, but I don’t want to get caught in the crossfire. They’re moving way too fast.
