“I don’t want to see you looking back one day, wondering where it all went.”
“How did you do it,” I ask, honestly curious how he managed to balance it all. “How did you swing actually having it all? And how did you make it look easy? You and Mom have a solid marriage. You always made us kids feel like we came before football. And somehow you were still able to have a monster of a career. Seriously... if you’d have fucked something up, at least I’d have someone to blame my poor life choices on,” I joke, but he just shakes his head.
“When you find the right person, you’ll know. Wait for them. Because doing this life with your mother... the balancing act of it all. It was fun with her by my side. She kept me grounded. Find a best friend, Nixon. They make living this life so much better. But don’t go searching. When the time is right, it’ll happen. Trust that and follow your gut. Instincts are there for a reason, son. Listen to them.”
That’s twice he’s said something like that. I guess he’s getting less subtle these days. “I hear ya, Dad.”
I don’t tell him I heard him Saturday night too, even if I did.
I know he’s talking about Kenzie because I don’t typically bring women around my family. I never have. But Kenzie’s different, even if I’m not looking for anything long-term. But damn, do I want something with her right now.
Nixon
You delivering babies right now, doc?
Kenzie
If I was, I wouldn’t be texting you back, now would I? I’m waiting on a stubborn baby girl who just isn’t ready to be born yet. But she’s coming soon, so I’m still at the hospital. What are you doing?
Nixon
Thinking about the other night on the phone.
Kenzie
Do you have any study sheets for me, Mr. Sinclair?
Nixon
You haven’t had your next lesson yet. I’ve got to teach you the material before I can test you on it.
Kenzie
How about a course syllabus so I know what to expect?
Nixon
Let’s just say our next lesson will consist of an oral quiz. Text me when you get home.
Kenzie
It could be late.
Nixon
I didn’t ask what time, Mac.
Kenzie
Yes sir. Are you always so bossy?
Nixon
You have no idea, beautiful.
KENZIE
I don’t know how many coffees it takes to be considered a people person, but it’s safe to say, it’s not three.
