He sat next to Lily at the start of dinner and has been monopolizing her time the entire meal. Plus, Randy’s been trying to butter me up, and his voice is starting to grate on my fucking nerves. After dinner, the girls help me clean up as the two guys sit and watch football, which is something I would normally do, but I have absolutely no interest in watching it with them. Once we’re done in the kitchen, we all head back to the living room, Charlotte immediately goes to sit next to Randy. I’m about to take the seat next to Lars just so that Lily doesn’t have to, when he grabs her hand and pulls her down. “Sit with me, babe. We can share the popcorn.”

“Uh…” She looks uncomfortable and moves away. “I’m okay right here. I’m not hungry, thanks.”

Randy and Charlie are cuddled up talking about God knows what, and Lars is telling Lily something I can’t hear from the recliner on the other side of the living room. I feel like a third wheel in my own goddamn house with my woman sitting with another guy right in front of me. I let it be known that I’m pissed when I stand up and turn off the television. “It’s been great. We’ll have to do this again.”

“Dad…” Charlotte whines.

“Lily, are you staying over or leaving? Because if you’re leaving, you need to head out now before it gets too late. If you’re staying, then you’d better get to bed because you’ll need to head out early tomorrow morning.” I know I sound crazy, but I don’t care.

“Uh…I think maybe I’ll stay.”

“I…um…I guess I’ll call you later?” Randy says to Charlie and she nods, eyeing me suspiciously.

“Walk me out, babe?” Lars says to Lily.

If the motherfucker calls her babe one more time, I won’t be held responsible for my actions.

“I think we need to talk, Lars,” Lily says. I know she’s going to let him down. I have no doubt about it.

“Good night, everyone,” I say, heading to my room as the foursome walks out of the house.

From my window, I see Randy and Charlie walking to his car. She kisses him good night. It’s way too long of a kiss. What the fuck? It’s not like they won’t see each other again. I want to open the window and yell at them. Then I want to break Randy’s dick.

Lily stands by the entrance of the house, her hands in her pockets as she says something to Lars. Her body language is clear: she’s not interested. Lars takes a step forward and she takes a step back. Now I’m on high alert. Then he says something else, something I can’t hear, and she puts her hand out to stop him from approaching, but he moves it out of the way. Now she’s caged in, and I see fucking red.

I take the stairs two steps at a time and throw open the front door. “Get your hands off of her!” I roar at Lars. “She’s mine. Do not fucking touch her.” I turn to Lily, her eyes wide. I look her over, patting her arms and cupping her face. “Are you okay, baby?”

“Linc…” she whispers.

“‘Baby’?” Lars asks.

I hear Charlotte behind me. “Wh—what is going on? She’s yours? I’m…What?”

I realize what I’ve done. How can I take this back? I look at Lily and she’s completely still. Maybe she’s in shock. I start to back track. “It’s not what…” But the truth is, it’s time I manned the fuck up. No more lies.

I brace myself, but then take the plunge. “Charlie,” I say, pulling Lily to me. I take her hand in mine and kiss the bottom of her wrist. “I’m in love with Lily.”

“You’re what?!” Charlie yells.

“Holy fuck,” Randy gasps and Lars looks really fucking confused.

“You are?” Lily asks, surprised.

I wasn’t exactly expecting to blurt that out. But, fuck it. It’s true. I love her.

I turn to her, the only one who matters right now. Charlotte will soon be married and she’ll be gone. I have to move on with my life, and I want that life to involve Lily. “Yeah, I am. I love you, Lily.”

“Really?” she asks with tear-filled eyes. “I thought…I just didn’t think that you…Oh, Linc, I love you too.”

“Wait…what?” Charlotte asks again, and we both turn our attention to her.

Lily lets go of my hand and takes a step towards her best friend, my daughter. “I’m sorry, Char. I know this is weird and unexpected and new. We didn’t plan it. But it’s true. I don’t want to keep this from you anymore.”

Charlotte spins and starts to yell at me. “You gave me shit about getting married and all this time you’ve been screwing my best friend? She’s my fucking age!”

“Charlie!” I scold.

“Oh no. No, no, no. You can’t be mad at me for getting upset.” She turns to Randy. “Get me out of here.”
